Historical Olympic Medal Count

The New York Times has an interactive timeline/map/infographic that shows the medal count of each country for all of the Modern Games since 1896. At the link, select a year, then click on each country's circle to see the medal count. Link -via Digg

Look at Australia!!

A country that has only just broken the 20 million population mark.

Unbelievable number of medals.

Also re the drifting geography , much like the London Tube graphic that we're all familiar with, this is also not a map.

I'm impressed with the medal count of Cuba. in Athens it was only 3 medals short of Britain's total. And I would assume the money/facilities involved in Britain's team would have been far greater than that of Cuba.

Well, India got it's first olympic medal in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics ... interesting

But if you check East Germany (a country that doesn't exist today), you will be surprised to find them still high on the list... even today!
