cool quotes, katey! well placed and very bold! they look really neat. but i would have to disagree with you about the freehand thing.. it REALLY depends on the artist. yes, all in all you shouldn't let an artist freehand for obvious reasons, but some artists thrive on it. my tat guy (www.wellstattoo.com) is amazing and could do a tat start-to-finish completely freehand and it would be the most amazing thing ever. but he's just good like that. he actually did most of my back tat freehand and i'm very pleased with it.

melissa-- that's great your sister does that. i can't imagine how many people would screw up their own tattoo because they're illiterate. i'm wondering how many other tat places make you sign off on spelling, because you would think that to avoid later conflict ALL parlors would do that. you would also think all of them would ID as well... like they're supposed to... by law...

the guy's tat above, though, is actually quite hysterical. the fact that he would put "i'm awesome" on his back in the first place makes me believe he doesn't take himself seriously (which is good, because you have to be able to make fun of yourself). and what adds to the contradiction is that it's also misspelled. i don't know, it actually adds to the silliness of the tattoo itself. but i'm an optimist, and can make the most sad situation into the favorite of the day.

I knew a girl who got "I contain multitudes" (from a Walt Whitman poem) misspelled on her back as "mulititudes."

Though I love body art I would never get text on my body. It's such a commitment and as a typographer, I doubt I'd ever be happy with just any person's lettering. Even when I got my quotation marks (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m269/ladykatey/newtattoos.jpg) I made the guy redo the templates 3 times before I was happy with the placement... then I made him touch up one side to even out the line width.

So all in all I say- shame to people who let tattoo artists free hand on them!

My sister is a tattoo artist. She makes every single customer sign off on the spelling on their tattoo. Right there on the legal paperwork with their proof of age and such, they have to sign a statement of what they said they wanted the tattoo to be, a copy of the design, and the exact spelling they requested. Just in case they get the ink done and decide later to claim it wasn't what they asked for. Strangely enough, she's had customers that could simply not be convinced that the spelling they thought they wanted would be wrong. She could show them in a dictionary, on the internet, run the word through spell check, and they would still swear up and down that they were right and she and all the sources were wrong. The worst she says is names, though. They are why she had to eventually start requiring the sign off on all lettering. She's had husbands that couldn't spell their spouse's name, even had mothers that couldn't spell their own child's name correctly!
