“…a fitting tribute for our out going President?”
C’mon, guys. Neatorama has more class than to post juvenile political cheap shots. Don’t ruin a decent blog.

Actually it would be more accurate if San Francisco were to name a sewage treatment plant after itself.

    Have you ever been, vanderleun?

It is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

I have lived there…. for a long, long time. And I have visited frequently. Sewer with views.

Here we go again, let’s see the usual cry babies start whining again, no politics on Neatorama, whaaaaaa!!! Funny how they come up with this ‘no politics on Neatorama’ schtick only when it’s a topic that’s negative or ostensibly negative about their political beliefs or politicians.

    Let the hypocrisy begin!

And by the way, I think this is a fitting tribute to Bush’s “legacy.”

That opinion, vanderleun, does wonders for your credibility.

  8. vanderleun

I don’t depend on your evaluation for my credibility. Nor on the denizens of San Francisco that reveal the sewer that flows through their souls on a daily basis with little, futile gestures such as this.

I would have thought that even those who carry hatred in their hearts for the people and culture of San Francisco would still be able to recognize and concede that it is a breathtakingly beautiful city sitting astride the Bay, as it does on one side and the Pacific on the other. I can’t understand how anyone could live there and not appreciate at least some aspects of the city’s visual appeal. It is truly a unique and special place. I love it.

As for the humorous attempt to rename the Sewage Treatment Plant after Bush… Have all remaining Bush supporters become hollowed out shells of their former selves, void of personality and stripped of a sense of humor?

Living his lie for the past 8 years has really done a number on you. I hope you’ll be able to work through it once he’s gone. The rest of the country needs you back with your sanity intact.

I hear you Adam. I love the Golden Gate Bridge, is always mentioned as one of the greatest bridges in the world. It’s also a world cultural icon, I bet many people the world over recognize the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco is also truly a multi cultural city, where many races and cultures mix and integrate relatively well compared to other major metropolitan areas. Breath taking views, fine eats, what more could you want from a city. To smear an entire city or location based on what some people feel or say is utterly childish. Yea, as if every single city in America 100 percent loves George Bush and his “legacy.”

Let the hypocrisy and double standards continue!

    I signed this petition.

Also Adam, don’t worry about Ver..blubblin or whatever. He obviously got his heart broken is SF.

Anyway, this is a funny idea, but apparently the workers at the plant aren’t too flattered, because it’s really a very advanced facility and they’re very proud of it. They don’t want it to be associated with crap.

I never got the hang of SanFran, I really loved Portland, perhaps because it is smaller, has trams and used DOLLAR COINS!!! (and had that super grouse book warehouse, that micro brewery, that old flick palace…etc, etc).

Oh….the thread? I would have thought a rehab clinic would be a better namesake for Mr. FortyThirder.

I have a confession to make.

I know that this is going to be difficult for some of my fellow liberals here. I’m sorry. I’ve been carrying this baggage around for years now and I really need to get it off my chest.

I *love* Kansas City, Missouri and Atlanta, Georgia. I love them!

Ostracize me if you must. I guess I’ll understand. I know that enjoying just a SINGLE city that is known for its conservatism is a betrayal of my own ideals and that of the secret consolidated liberal movement to introduce Socialism into these United States. I CANNOT deny it any further, however. Both Kansas City, Missouri and Atlanta, Georgia lift my spirits in ways that I hardly understand. Why do I feel warmth and happiness in both of these places?

Go ahead and excommunicate me from the our secret cabal if you must. I have to stay true to my heart and in my heart, conservative KC and ATL have their own special places.

I’m out of here. This site is no longer fun with so much political stuff on here. I am not particularly a fan of the current president, but this Stanhope guy has an agenda, and having someone else’s politics thrust at me is not something I find entertaining. I took a long break from coming here, hoping all the other complaints I was reading concerning the political content would persuade those in charge to tighten up the format. From what I see today, I can only assume this site is now actually intended to have political content. It’s a shame really, such a fun site before all this mess. I am thankful for the fun reading in the past, but I am gone.

    July 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Oh, grow up why don’t you, “seeya.” Perhaps as many as THREE posts out of the last THOUSAND that appeared here had anything to do with politics.

It’s a light-hearted general interest story in the International Herald Tribune and it’s funny. Is there anything I could possibly say or do to make George Bush less popular than he already is? Do you think, perhaps, that the International Herald Tribune erred in publishing the story, too?

If a group of citizens wanted to change the name of their city’s “Blowjob Museum” to “The Bill Clinton Blowjob Museum,” I’d post about it, too.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re choosing to leave. Perhaps you can find a bubble inside a vacuum to live in from now on where your feelings won’t be hurt the next time somebody - GASP - criticizes a politician in a humorous and irreverent fashion.

  36. VA
    July 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

I think it’s entirely appropriate. There are many similarities between GWB’s administration and a sewage plant.

Both have done a difficult, unpleasant job that is crucial for the preservation of society.

Without sewage plants, innocent people would die by the hundreds of thousands. Without bringing terrorists to justice and putting them out of business, the same would happen.

Both are jobs that elitist leftists turn their noses up to. Both require some self-sacrafice and hard work - another thing leftists turn their noses up at.

Other than that, it shows the childishness prevalent in the left in this country. If it wasn’t for the services of President Bush and the people who dispose of our sewage, most of these snotty, spoiled brats would be to dead to be funny.

Ha ha, too bad the likes of seeya don’t seem to understand that they ain’t complaining about politics in neatorama as long as it doesn’t affect their political beliefs or their favorite political candidates.

How many times must I repeat that the first ones to whine about leaving politics out of neatorama never complain about other political topics on here, like gun control, etc. etc.

And pretty please, I wish these people would truly carry out their empty threats of leaving neatorama. I bet they won’t, hypocrites. Just don’t let the door slam ya on the way out!

“For any of you who think San Fran is great because it is heavily leftist, remember that Detroit is approximately equally leftist.”

False Analogy: An informal fallacy. “In an analogy, two objects (or events), A and B are shown to be similar. Then it is argued that since A has property P, so also B must have property P. An analogy fails when the two objects, A and B, are different in a way which affects whether they both have property P.”

    AdamStanhope,

You might want to listen to some of the people commenting instead of just bashing them and telling them to grow up. Many of us come to this blog for something different than politics, which we are barraged with all the time. People would feel the same way if you posted something similar about Obama or anyone of any political affiliation. Many of us are just flat-out tired of ANYTHING political and political posts on Neatorama just strike me as unnecessary and you are only poster who puts them up, so why not just avoid them? Also, the way you wrote the post was confrontational when you called the naming of the sewage plant after George Bush “fitting.” While I agree that Bush has been a real crapper as president and needs to be flushed out ASAP, why not just keep political stuff off of Neatorama and let us look at funny videos and strange historical facts in peace?

  42. Geekazoid
    July 18th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

So I assume Greg and others feel the same about topics here about gun control, religion, other nation’s religions/beliefs, etc. etc.? Those are definitely political, and I don’t see people crying like a baby about leaving politics out when those subjects come around; quite contrary everyone LOVES to put in their two cents worth.

As always, hypocrisy and double standards rule. And again, for those whining and threatening not to come to neatorama anymore, please be true to your word instead of empty and hollow threats.

    Greg:

You’re being so disingenuous. The title of my post must have been so offensive that it forced all these readers to come in and comment negatively!

Confession: I don’t *love* every post that appears on this blog! I love this blog - but not every post tickles my fancy. I even SKIP SOME POSTS because they don’t interest me. There have even been a few whose subjects have been PERSONALLY DISAGREEABLE TO ME. I didn’t read those ones, either.

Look - some silly people in San Francisco are making a silly statement and it is newsworthy and “neat” because it is funny. I’m not taking it seriously - are you?

    Free offer to everyone:

If you’d like me to instruct you how to get the RSS feed for this site minus posts placed by me, I’ll be happy to do so.

  44. Greg
    July 18th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    Adam,

I was only offering a suggestion, I really don’t care that much what you post on here because, as you said, I can just skip those posts. Don’t you think it’s rude to be so combative with your readers, especially as I was trying to be polite, yet you label me as disingenuous. Before I felt like Neatorama was a place where suggestions would be looked at and treated with respect, rather than spat on by the contributors.

So go ahead, keeping posting things that create division and separate us, you have the power to post whatever you want,so do it, but just be aware that perhaps your combative posts, whether you mean to or not, might be alienating a large number of your readers and if you end up writing a blog that no one reads, all your doing is masturbating.

Ditto that. Barbershop rules: No politics, no religion. Neatorama is a very nice barbershop.

On the other hand, posting a picture of GWB with an ear of corn and a clever comment about a banana is funny without being insulting. Satire is good. Obnoxious self-righteous opinion is bad.

So when did this become a political message board? I come here to see funny cool and neat stuff, not to see contributors peddle their personal political beliefs.

If its a story bashing Bush, that’s one thing, but you don’t need to go adding your personal angst towards him with stuff like “fitting tribute for our outgoing President”.

I just don’t think you should taint the stories with biased views, that’s all.

    To seeya:

    See ya.

    To Greg:

You don’t believe yourself, and we can tell. You are disingenuous. You are clearly attempting to make a (very weak) case against Adam on the comments section of this here blog.

To everyone who thinks their holier-than-thou tales of
woe are going to sway the Neatorama staff to can Stanhope or curb his postings:

You all make me sick. You want a blog? Go make one. You don’t like this one? (I’m sorry Alex.) Goodbye.

    Don’t like a post?

    Skip it.

But you do not get to decide what Neatorama is all about. That is up to Alex.

Oh, woe is me, the golden days of Neatorama are through, magic days when there was no difference of opinion and everyone got along and the Internet was made of gold.

Get over it. Get over yourselves.

When you start your own blog, you can decide editorial content.

Until then, shedep. You disgust me.

  53. Greg
    July 19th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Wow, some of the people on this site are ridiculous. I’m not sure what I said that came off as disingenuous, perhaps some of you can shed some light on this?

I understand I don’t have to read this blog, in fact, I would save a lot of time if I didn’t, but a few months back, Alex asked the community what we thought would make the site better, a clear invitation to make suggestions for improvement of the blog, and now some of us are making them.

    Brayden,

I think the drive to rename it after George Bush is funny, but does the post mesh with the usual tone of Neatorama posts? I don’t think so, so I merely expressed that and tried to give a more tempered approach to topic since many of the people who didn’t like the post merely ranted like crazy people.

But if you don’t like our comments, skip them, no one is making you click the comment section of the story, you went here on your own.

  54. mokuwai
    July 19th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

It seems to me that the smart thing to do would be to stay away from politically slanted posts as a whole. The whole argument of “if you don’t like it f- off and find a new blog or start your own” is very backwards. Neatorama is a business and the people who visit the site are customers. I’ve never understood why a business would do things to alienate their customers. It’s rather funny that Adam is the only one who this theme continually arises. Everybody else consistently posts excellent material here. When Alex posts political items he at least does it in a way that isn’t interjecting his own political views.

I as a customer have come to love Neatorama as a daily visit. And I believe that Adam is ruining what I have come to love. There are obviously many loyal readers here who don’t want to have to leave this site. Adam seems to be doing just that, driving away customers.

Just a thought for you Alex… I would ask Adam to keep your customers in mind with his posts.

I’m surprised so few are outraged, as I am, at this stupid waste of money. How many tens of thousands of dollars are going to be wasted voting on this trivial and unproductive attempt at political humor?

San Francisco (my teh city) is broke and burning millions a week on b.s., they don’t need this, too.

  56. Adam Stanhope
    July 19th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

I think that a handful of you are taking this post - and yourselves - far too seriously.

Whether or not one loves or hates George Bush, this story has an element of humor to it. You may be so wrapped up into the “us vs. them” politics that have polarized much of the nation over the past few years, and you may disagree with the sentiment, but come on, folks, trying to name a sewage treatment plant after an unpopular political figure is funny.

If it was Neatorama’s goal or my own personal goal to use this blog as a tool to constantly disparage George Bush, it would certainly manifest itself in a far more obvious way than this post. A team of people could sit from dawn until dusk, all day, every day, posting about people, places, events, programs, jokes, books, publications, movies, sound clips, video clips, etc., etc., etc. beating up on Bush - or any other controversial political figure for that matter. This is simply not happening.

I’ve been posting to Neatorama for more than a year and a half now and out of the SCORES of posts that I have contributed, I think I can count the overtly political ones on one hand.

It’s ironic that the same ideologues who decry political correctness seem to assume a quivering lip and call for censorship the moment their hero is criticized or satirized on the internet.

There were 19 posts yesterday, one of which told the [funny] story about a group of eccentric people in San Francisco who are floating the JOKE idea to rename a sewage treatment plant after George Bush - and the reaction here reminds me of a small mob of Yosemite Sams - “hopping mad” at this perceived transgression. Relax. It’s a joke. Somehow I think that even Mr. Bush himself isn’t losing any sleep over this one.

According to our blogging software, there are more than 15,000 posts published to this blog to date. If your thesis here in this thread is that I have somehow subverted this blog and turned it into a forum for inappropriate presidential criticism, then a quick contemplation of the numbers involved should dissuade you of this particular fantasy. I’d also suggest that some of the accusations leveled against me in this thread and in email to me personally are far more volatile and inappropriate than the JOKE about renaming a sewage treatment plant after Bush.

I do not shower this site with politically oriented posts and I will pledge to continue not to turn this into a political website in the future.

That being said, if some day in the future a dairy farm in Wisconsin that sells its processed manure in bags to garden centers around the country announces that it is going to change the brand name of its manure from “Sunshine Farm Cow Manure” to “Bush Administration Cow Manure,” then I reserve the right to post the story. You, in turn, needn’t read it.

    XOXO
    Adam

Oh, Adam. You know that your editorializing isn’t appreciated by everybody, but you continue to do it. Then, you get very defensive when people object to your political posts.

Out of 57 comments for this post so far, 9 are yours. You come off as insulting and condescending tone in your comments. Just post and don’t worry about what people say after it’s up. Or be a little less biased in the first place.

Some people put up crazy comments on both sides of the political issues here. But lumping them all in together just weakens your own argument.

For the record, I’m not a Bush supporter - I’m not even in the country. But this sort of thing is disrespectful to the office as much as it is to the man.

  59. Adam Stanhope
    July 19th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

    Come on, Ted. Lighten up.

I wasn’t complicit in the stunt these people in San Francisco are pulling off. I merely repeated it here. That’s not editorializing.

Nothing whatsoever that either you or I or the people in San Francisco or the other visitors to this site could ever say or do is capable of changing President Bush’s lot in this world.

If anyone is editorializing here, Ted, it is you:

But this sort of thing is disrespectful to the office as much as it is to the man.

That’s a pretty bold declaration for a man accusing *me* of editorializing.

  60. Dave

This is exactly the type of sophomoric thing I’d expect from the leftists loonies that seem to run the show there. Way to go San Fran. Cute, but you’re not winning any friends; just preaching to the choir.

Amazing; all I had to see was the title to know it had Stanhope’s name attached. The opinions you express, Adam, do wonders for your credibility. Was this story funny? Yes. But it was your editorializing and offensive posturing in the comments that really sets people off. If you’re insecure enough to be unable to respond to criticism in the comments, maybe you shouldn’t be posting.

    @ Geekazoid & Adam:
Instead of getting all bothered about people who are bothered about your obvious left leanings on posts dealing with politicians who don’t share your political views, how about you point out the last Neatorama post on a political figure from the left that was less than positive? I don’t recall seeing anything about the Bill Clinton Presidential Library and Massage Parlor…

What’s the issue again, Dave? Is it that I am a leftist or that I haven’t posted anything funny about Bill Clinton - the guy who was our president 10 years ago?

Truth be told, I’m working on a series of knee-slapping posts about Harry Truman!

Do you think the Communist Party of the USA will revoke my membership if/when I move ahead with the posts?

Sorry; poorly worded sentence in my comment above; should have read, “If you’re so insecure that you’re unable to ignore the comments. maybe you shouldn’t be posting.” That’s better. And I’d better get some sleep. Too. Much. Driving. Today….

Apparently the issue is that your skin is too thin to be doing this sort of work. Show me any other Neatorama writer (or any other blog writer for that matter) whose name appears so often in the comments on his/her own posts.

Adam, you really are a pain in the rear. Your claims that you post this stuff just because it’s “newsworthy” and “neat” hold no water when you editorialize in the post — and then comment ELEVEN times to defend yourself and criticize your readers. I wouldn’t mind seeing a hundred anti-Bush posts here a day, but I find that sort of specious bullying really distasteful.

Adam, you prove my own point with your reply.

    The definition of editorialize:
    1. To express an opinion in or as if in an editorial.
    2. To present an opinion in the guise of an objective report.

    Or, more simply put:
To insert personal opinions into an objective statement.

“a fitting tribute for our outgoing President” is editorializing, albeit mildly.

“this sort of thing is disrespectful to the office as much as it is to the man” is not editorializing. I was not making, or pretending to make, an objective statement, but was expressing my opinion. For someone who expresses his opinion so vociferously, Adam, you certainly seem to have issues with others doing the same.

Nobody expects Neatorama to be completely objective, but there is some level of expectation for objectivity, and you certainly don’t hold back with your political and personal criticism in the comments.

For someone who’s not taking it very seriously, you certainly appear to be argumentative. I think c-dub’s right: it is a form of bullying.

Personally I think it would be bad luck to name it after Bush, funny as the idea may be.

If one is still cheerleading for this administration, there’s not much point in arguing with them.

This is a “neat” post to be sure. This is exactly the kind of cool stuff I come here for. Thanks Adam!

Keep it up Adam. I thought it was hilarious. I called a couple of friends and told them, and they thought it was hilarious too.

@Tim — What kind of ego do you have to possess to actually email the proprietor of a site you like to read, only to tell them how to run their site. “Alex, It’s time you reconsidered on what we spoke about in our Emails.” By your words, its obvious that Alex declined your suggestion to “flush” Adam. Did you really think that bitching and moaning would get anything done? Guess what — you’re not going to agree with everything you see in life. Neatorama is no different. If you disagree with something, SKIP IT. Don’t go crying to daddy, complaining how Adam hurt your feelings, and life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Grow the fuck up.

“I think that a handful of you are taking this post - and yourselves - far too seriously.

Whether or not one loves or hates George Bush, this story has an element of humor to it. You may be so wrapped up into the “us vs. them” politics that have polarized much of the nation over the past few years, and you may disagree with the sentiment, but come on, folks, trying to name a sewage treatment plant after an unpopular political figure is funny.”

The story is funny. You’re biased political slant isn’t.

Another great post by my man Adam.

LMFAO at the uptight conservative WHINERS crying about the website. Start your own blog or skip Adam’s posts if you hate him so bad! Sheesh…Leave it to the Fruher’s supporters to display publically extreme levels of bitchassedness.

WAHHHH I dont think dis is verwy neat! WAAAHHH WAHHH Dis eez nawt neet!!! WAAAHHHH WAHHH

    smallerdemon:

[False Analogy: An informal fallacy. “In an analogy, two objects (or events), A and B are shown to be similar. Then it is argued that since A has property P, so also B must have property P. An analogy fails when the two objects, A and B, are different in a way which affects whether they both have property P.]

You’re missing the point. And actually helping mine. Anything good in San Fran doesn’t necessarily come from being extremely leftist.

Actually a sewer treatment plant is good for everyone, it recycles our waste and in some cases we reuse the water for our consumption. these plants are now built eco-friendly as well. so that does not bother me. Personaly if you want to name things after presidents then i say we as a nation should name the next STD after billy jeff.

Wow; over 48 hours since we’ve heard from Comrade Stanhopsky. Wonder if he got his blogging/commenting credentials pulled, or is he just sulking?

Adam gets a bunch of shit (so to speak) for an admitted editorial but vanderleun, the man who originally uttered “I am aware of all internet traditions” gets to comment here without any backlash whatsoever? The world’s gone mad.

George W. Bush’s sentence-by-sentence speaking skills are deteriorating. Apparently, this may be due to a mental illness called “presenile dementia.” Bush may or may not be secretly still drinking heavily. Bush lied, and thousands of people died. Bush suffers from narcissism and megalomania. Moreover, Bush has been arrested three times. Bush was arrested for disorderly conduct. Bush was arrested for stealing. Bush was also arrested for a serious crime—driving under the influence of alcohol. There are reasons to believe that Bush suffers from a learning disability. Bush’s learning disability would explain a lot of things. All in all, Bush is a severely mentally ill individual. Bush is not fit to be the president of the United States.

    Bush should be locked up.
