Considering the proportion of the total spendable wealth available to the world, there would be little doubt it would be Alexander of Macedon (or the Great), he had it and he spent it. In fact money by our current definition wasn’t really money, until after he spent it.

yes rockefeller was the richest this list is accurate, the way they transfer the old to today’s standards is that back then it was all gold no fiat money inflation etc., also the rulers of egypt, china, and other such places might have most of the money in the economy but it’s also a tiny economy. that’s like naming the biggest fish in the world and arguing the biggest fish in your pond’s gotta be up there. this list IS accurate.

Nizam and his cronies were descendants of Aurangzeb and the Mughal dynasty who were responsible for plundering India for 100s of years. They ruled an area in the heart of India that once mined 90% of the worlds diamonds. No wonder he is one of the richest. He sucked up to the British by sponsoring their World War 1 efforts in the hope that he could hold on. Tough luck and good riddance. Hyderabad is part of free democratic secular Indian republic instead of an oppressive muslim regime.

Dear concerned comment posters,
Please to not turn this list into a matter of race or sex. Americans may have substantial stakes on this list because the U.S. economy was and is the largest economy in the world. Thus, the richest man in America is the richest man in the world. The same is true for other countries with large economies, and I’m sure the authors of this article apologize if businessmen from Zimbabwe don’t make the list.
Also, many people are complaining about the absence of families such as the Rothschilds from this list. This does not invalidate the list, as monetal records are not available and the wealth is divided among many members of a wealthy family. Therefore, you cannot include a family in the list of richest men in history-unless of course there was a patriarch or head of the family.

for those of you who say solomon was the richest man in history you are wrong. the bible never states no man will ever be come richer it states he was the richest man in the world when he was alive.. not before or since.. solomon took in 666 talons a year in taxes.. which is around 500 tons of gold over his entire reign according to history alexander the great took over a 1000 tons of gold from the city of susa alone.. therefor he is richer then solomon was..500 tons of gold is alot of money but no where near as rich as any of the men on this list

Great to see the Nizam of Hyderabad on the list. But I think he was worth a lot more. His jewels alone which were taken over by the aggressor India, of a peaceful state of Hyderabad must be worth that much. It is so sad that one who governed so brilliantly having inherited a bankrupt State faced naked illegal aggression and the whole world kept quite. The subjects loved him regardless of religion. Ah Hyderabad, Ah Nizam!

The Rothschilds cant be included on this list because of the lack of empirical evidence relating to their wealth. I’m sure we can all speculate that if we did have a figure it would be far higher then Rockefeller and his peers.

Read up on Operation Golden Lily and the financial looting of all the rest of SE Asia by Japan’s emperor Hirohito. They used prisoners to excavate over a hundred booby trapped tunnels in the Philippines and stashed thousands of tons of gold and other precious jewels in them. McArthur recovered some and Marcos spent his whole regime looking for, and finding, more hidden loot. Much of it wound up in Switzerland and many other stashes around the world. Some of the money (about $35b in 1960 dollars) went to an M-fund given by Nixon to Japan’s Prime Minister Kishi. Some of the recovered loot was also used to fund the cold war. A very interesting book by Sterling and Peggy Seagrave, of a few years ago, is called “Gold Warriors: America’s Secret Recovery of Yamashita’s Gold”. You can also buy a couple of CDs from the Seagraves that supplement the book with seemingly endless documents, maps, and photos that supports their story.

The mongol empire was the largest contiguous empire but only covered 22% of the world whereas the British empire was between 25% – 30% and the largest the world has ever seen. The mongol empire covered what was, at the time, one of the least populous places on earth and at a time when there were very little resources or measurements of wealth bar the amount of animals and land owned. The British empire in contrast controlled some of the most populous places on the planet at a time when the industrial revolution (started in Britain) was in full effect leading to enormous generation of wealth. There is no comparison between the two.
