Twilight Movie House?
I snapped these photos a while back when a house nearby mine was rented by a movie shoot for a ridiculously large amount of money. Later, I found out that the house is supposedly (emphasis on supposedly, now) for an upcoming tween vampire movie Twilight, based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel.
Anyhoo, here are the pics:

It took the movie crews one week to turn the house into what they wanted (complete with fake cactus as you can see in the background of the second photo) … and after the shoot, they converted the house back into what it was (but with new paint, etc). Overall, it was a pretty neat deal for the homeowners! Now, anyone want to rent my house for a movie shoot?

Should I Stop or Should I Go?

This crazy traffic light is a 14 "lanterns" (that’s the official term) found in the Central Business District in Melbourne, Australia.
More traffic light shenanigans at Traffic Signals
Update 7/3/08 – Thanks to Neatorama reader Lindsey, we have a better pic of the monster traffic light:

Lindsey said that the traffic light, which is located at a major intersection, is for cars, trams and bicycle lanes.
Hiding in Plain Sight: Man Planted Cannabis Hedges
Talk about "cultivating drugs" – a couple in Nerang, Queensland, Australia, decided that the best way to grow their cannabis plants is to hide them in plain sight … so they made them into hedges!
Sen-Sgt Symons said he had never seen cannabis shaped and trimmed into a hedge in his 25 years in the police service.
Neighbours looked over the fence in amazement as police dug up the manicured crop and removed it to be destroyed.
"They are a lovely couple," said one neighbour. "Who would have thought that hedge was grass? It just looks like an ordinary hedge in a suburban yard."
No Ho Zone

Flickr user cloudedmaple took this priceless photo on the corner of Court St. and Miller Rd. in Flint, Michigan. If you look closely, the sign also says "We are watching you" and features a "ho" running away from a dog.

If Earth was hit by a Meteor
What would happen if our planet was ever to cross paths with a meteor? Well, according to this simulation it would be bad news for everyone and everything. This is a small scene from a Discovery Channel program called “Miracle Planet” which details the scary thought of a 500 km (or 300 miles) wide meteor hitting our planet in our lifetime. The amount of kinetic energy released when it hits would be enough to cause a firestorm powerful enough to vaporize all life on our planet and evaporate all of the Worlds oceans.
After the jump you’ll see the same video except without the narration and some music that I think has more “impact”
on how powerful an image of a meteor hitting the Earth would be.

The Fattest States

Calorie Lab’s Fattest States rankings for 2008 are out, and Mississippi is number one for the third year in a row. Colorado has the smallest percentage of obese people.
West Virginia passed Alabama to become the second fattest state in 2008. The four states of Mississippi, West Virginia, Alabama, and Louisiana have obese populations that exceed 30 percent over a three-year average and two-thirds of the citizens of Mississippi and West Virginia were either overweight or obese by CDC standards in 2007.
Washington's Boyhood Home Found
Excavations at Ferry Farm in Virginia have turned up the foundation of George Washington’s boyhood home. Half a million artifacts have been uncovered and are being studied for clues about Washington’s early life.
“When you look at the normal biographies of Washington, they start when he’s 23,” said David Muraca, who oversaw the excavation as director of archaeology at the George Washington Foundation, which owns Ferry Farm.
“This piece of the story is very difficult for historians to get their hands around,” he said. “This dig will let us start our stories much earlier.”
Washington first lived in the house at Ferry Farm in 1738, when he was six years old. After seven years of work, the team has identified the floor plan, despite the fact that stones were recycled when the home was altered and remodeled over time. Link

Satellite Imagery as Art

Satellites take pictures of the earth for mapping, weather, science, and security. Art is a low priority when you’ve spend this much money to launch the camera! But the earth is a beautiful place, and the pictures sometimes are works of art. See Environmental Graffiti’s 30 Most Incredible Abstract Satellite Images of Earth.
The images you see below were taken at the turn of the Millennium, when NASA’s scientists had a brilliant idea: to scan through 400,000 images taken by the Landsat 7 satellite and display only the most the most beautiful. A handful of the best were painstakingly chosen and then displayed at the Library of Congress in 2000.

Groovy Google Earth interface
Holographic Google Earth from Nicolas Loeillot on Vimeo.
How cool is this? Google Earth projected into the air as a 2D hologram? From the Google Earth Blog:
The technology comes from UbiqWindow and lets a computer screen be projected in mid-air. They have devised a touchless way to interact with the “hologram”, and Google Earth is a great way to show off its capabilities. it’s not a 3D projection, just 2D. But, it sure looks cool.
