Cibo Matto - Sugar Water

Our gracious host Alex posted earlier with a Cibo Matto reference. Sure, Cibo Matto taught me how to know my chicken, but they are so much more important than that. Check out this amazing video of their tune "Sugar Water" and think for a moment how difficult it must have been to film. YouTube.

Bonus: This song is often associated with a popular late 90s/early naughts American television series. Without using Google, who can name the series and the relationship it has to this song.

Update: Reader "hiland" notes: "Michel Gondry directed this thangggg." Thank you, hiland.

Further update: I just remembered that there is a "making of" video that documented the task of filming it.

You FOOL!

Difficult to film?

Watch it again!

There is nothing difficult about this at all!!!! Just watch one side, and then flip the other and watch that side only, and then put the two together.

It's a nice effect, but it's not difficult at all!!!!

Pay attention!

umm... It's easy to figure out how it works but it's not easy to film. Try planning out how to get two sets of storyboard and the timing to match perfectly in reverse, and you'll know how intricate it is.

Ah yes...after tracking down the video (the version here is telling me it's removed :( )I have seen this before it's on the Michel Gondry DVD collection. Not bad but I prefer some of his other work.

I've found that the "No Longer Available" thing is often simply incorrect or at least temporary. I've just been able to play the video now, even after clearing my cache. If you run into a "No Longer Available" message, clicking through on the text link to YouTube often addresses it.

it was in the season 2 premier of Buffy, after she'd died and come back and was BAD (oh noes)! She and Xander danced to it while Cibo Matto played on stage at the Bronze.

PK,

you really are a fool.

Watch the LEFT side only -

then tell me what's confusing you?

The song works in the same way - it has a mid-point at which the first half is the same "tra la la" at the same points as the second half - which is how they timed the reverse point.

So you get the girl "walk backwards" for a couple of seconds at the end of the trick and it looks like the trick is amazing -

FOOLED YA!
