3D Holographic Display System Is Almost Here!

By Alex in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on Jun 27, 2008 at 2:30 pm

The researchers at the ICT Graphics Lab at University of Southern California have created a low-cost 3D holographic display system … and what image did they choose to showcase the technology? The TIE Fighter from Star Wars!

Pft… they’ve had these things at Sharper Image for years.
The little spinning holographic caller ID thing.
    Big deal.

This is no more a hologram than any other persistence of vision gadget. Different viewpoints of an object are generated and reflected off of a moving mirror — big deal. You wanna try putting your hand into that?

I called my little Star Wars freak 9 year old son over to see this article. This is a direct quote from him:

“OK. I think the 21st century is finally starting to get to what it’s supposed to be.”

This is a pretty ancient idea, though I hope it gets further than the one shown on Tomorrow’s World in the 90s. IIRC they used a phosphor coated spinning helix and a laser which excited it.
