I not only own the standard Operation game (without the new brain freeze piece - I've had it a while), but the be all, end all to the Operation games: Alien Autopsy. Yep, instead of butterflies in the stomach, you get to remove radio implants and telepathy organs. And it doesn't buzz; it screams. Wheeee!

Didn't "little shavers" come from Burma Shave signs? That's certainly the earliest reference I've ever seen.

If you liked Candyland, you'll LOVE Cartagena (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/826). It's Candyland for grownups, full of delicious, take-that fun.
And it's got pirates.

I always wanted Candyland, Operation, Guess Who?, and Mouse Trap. I hated Snakes and Ladders, though. It was so arbitrary... and I never got the connection with good vs. bad, either. It's a roll of the dice, for goodness sake!

Please, Please do another one! I love this board game memory lane post. Here a few more of my favorites:

Perfection - the ultimate anxiety delivery system for children. "pop pop goes perfection" What always killed me is that the kids look so happy while playing it on the cover. Whereas, i tended to have furrowed brows and a huge knot in my stomach.

Enchanted Forrest - this one is a little obscure, but it had lots of little trees and some sort of castle fairy-tale thing going on. Total 80's game.

Don't Spill the Beans - i used to love this, i can still remember how i wanted to eat the beans, and always hoped they would be replaced with Jelly Beans. They probably don't even use real beans anymore.

As far as Mouse Trap goes - i never used to actually play the game, i just liked put it together and watch it work (that is when it did work, which wasn't all that often).

Candyland looks like fun, I haven't seen that game before...
I think it's an America only thing. Ah well. You guys don't have the Great Game of Britain!

Snakes and ladders has been around since 2 BC? That's a suspiciously accurate date. Perhaps a typo?

Mouse trap was one of my favorite games. I guess it started my whole fascination with how things worked, watching one device activate another which activated another and so on. Sometimes I would set up the game just to play with the contraptions. The one downside with it was that if you set your game piece down on the board too hard, it would trigger the traps and you'd have to reset the freaking thing before you could move on XD

Wow, I ramble too. Yours are more entertaining though.

I just finished my third reading of Orwell's 1984 yesterday morning - I was struck by Winston's description of a particular memory, playing Snakes and Ladders with his mother just before she vanished. I hadn't really noticed that in my previous readings but this time it really stood out to me. Seeing this article just makes that experience all the more interesting, particularly now that you have me thinking about the moral implications of that particular game.

Mousetrap rocked. You built the trap as you played. Awesome.

And at your next party, try Strip Operation. More Awesome!
