Woman Imprisoned 18 Years by Own Family for Baby Out of Wedlock

By Alex in Crime & Law on Jun 14, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Remember the crazy story about the Austrian man who kept his daughter locked in an underground dungeon?

Here’s something alarmingly similar: a woman was locked in a filthy bedroom by her family and forced to live in squalor for 18 years after having a baby out of wedlock!

Police said that Maria, whom they say was suffering from psychological problems, was kept a prisoner shortly after falling pregnant with her child – now a 17-year-old student.

Her mother Anna Rosa Golino, 80, brother Prisco, 44, a farmer and sister Michelina, 54, a primary school teacher took action after she had an affair with a mystery man and got pregnant.

Captain Carmine Rosciano, of Santa Maria Capua Vetere police, said: ‘We received an anonymous tip-off that a woman was being held and we raided the family home in rural land on the outskirts of the town.

‘Maria was found in her locked bedroom in a confused state and surrounded with filth and excrement – she was living in squalor.’

The house looks so pretty and cheerful from the outside. What a contrast from what was going on inside. So sad. I pray that the lady can recover her sanity.

So it’s unacceptable to have a baby out of wedlock… but it’s okay to treat your daughter/sister like crap for 18 years?

One of them was an effing teacher. She taught children. Your family is supposed to be the ones you can rely on. Unbelievable.

Maybe the brother is the father. Also the son was probably brainwashed all his life to think his mother was evil.

Or told that she was dead. If you’re holding someone captive, I’d think its best to tell as few people as possible.

Yeah, it’s a cultural thing more than a religious one.
Once it was not just deprecated but totally unacceptable for a woman to have relationships outside her marriage (and somewhere things still go this way). I’ve heard stories of women being locked in the house the whole day to prevent them to see anyone.
Domestic violence, crimes of passion and maschilism in general are still a big issue in the southern rural Italy, we see a lot of stuff like this on the news.
