Art of Manliness' Barbershop Locator

Posted by Alex in Blog & Internet, Fashion on June 2, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Our pal the Art of Manliness blog is asking your help to locate and map barbershops in the United States:

Barbershops are one of the last bastions of manliness today. What other place can you get a sharp haircut and good conversation with a bunch of men? Having difficulty finding a decent barbershop? Well, your
troubles are over with this handy dandy barbershop locator.

In order for this to work, we need everyone to collaborate. If you know where a good barbershop is, please add it on the map along with a short review of the place. A picture of the shop would be fantastic. The more people who contribute, the better the locater will be. That way next time you move into a new town, you’ll know exactly where to go to get your ears lowered.

I used to go to a barbershop, it was fun but the barber just took too long … Now I just go to Sport Clips, well at least they still have the scalp massage! LinkThanks Mu!

Marilyn and Bruce, If They Had Lived to See Old Age

Posted by Alex in Pictures on June 2, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Czech artist Andrzej Dragan (who also happens to be a quantum physicist!) did a fantastic photoshop job on imagining how Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee would look like had they lived to see old age.

Elephant With a Prosthetic Leg

Posted by Alex in Animal, Weapons & War on June 2, 2008 at 7:50 pm

It’s sad to see this wee elephant named Mocha got its leg blown off by a land mine (grrr … stupid land mine!). But thanks to modern science and the Friends of the Asian Elephant organization in thailand, Mocha can walk again … with a prosthetic leg!

Check out Miss C’s post at our pal mental_floss about all sort of animal prosthetics (including a rubber tail for Fuji the dolphin, new beak for Uzonka the stork, and a pegleg for George the Pegleg Parrot!)

How to Read Mayan

Posted by Alex in Book & Lit on June 2, 2008 at 7:49 pm

This is pretty cool: an interactive Flash website by NOVA at pbs.org about reading ancient Mayan writings. This is the Stela 3 from the pyramid at the Maya site of Piedras Negras in Guatemala.

A series of Maya hieroglyphs may look like just so many pretty pictures or symbols to you. But they actually say something, of course, as Mayanists have known for some time (see Time Line of Decipherment). In this feature, you can actually "read" a passage of glyphs carved into an ancient Maya stela, or dedicatory stone monument. You can both read the ancient Maya (transcribed using the Roman alphabet) and hear it spoken (by Mayanist Barbara MacLeod) as well as read the English translation.

Meet Aqua Ray

Posted by Ali S. in Arts & Crafts, Science & Tech, Video Clips on June 2, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Ok, now we we’re all acquainted with Air Ray, right? Well, meet it’s baby watery cousin Aqua Ray by Festo! Mimicking the movement of its larger real life counterpart (the Manta Ray) the Aqua Ray has the ability to realistically swim, dive, and turn like the real thing. From the video you can gauge the size of the Aqua Ray when you see the diver next to it. Tiny and adorable! I want to buy a carton full of these and put them in an Olympic sized pool and swim in it.

8 Non-Wikipedia Pedias

Posted by Alex in Blog & Internet on June 2, 2008 at 2:03 pm

From Wired, here comes a list of the 8 best non-Wikipedia pedias by Brian Dustrud. For example:

Uncyclopedia
"The content-free encyclopedia"
A parody site inspired by inaccurate but hilarious Wikipedia entries. Jimbo’s creation is defined here as a massively multiplayer online editing game played by redundancy experts.

Wookieepedia
"The Star Wars wiki"
Did you know that "snot vampire" is slang terminology for the Anzati species? Of course not. No one did.

Dickipedia
"A wiki of dicks"
Sample entry: Gerald "Geraldo" Rivera is a TV journalist, noted egotist, former talk-show host, and a dick.

Inventor Buried in Pringles Can

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on June 2, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Fredric J. Baur, designer of the Pringles potato crisps container, was so proud of his accomplishment that he wanted to be buried in it!

Dr. Fredric J. Baur was so proud of having designed the container for Pringles potato crisps that he asked his family to bury him in one.

His children honored his request. Part of his remains was buried in a Pringles can – along with a regular urn containing the rest – in his grave at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Springfield Township.

Posted by Alex in Video Clips on June 2, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Forget American Idol … the funniest TV contest is coming to America straight from the King of funny TV shows, Japan. FOX TV is now casting for the American-version of Hole in the Wall.

I have a sneaking feeling that this was on Neatorama already, but what the hey, it’s funny: Hit play or go to Link [YouTube] to see how it’s played – via Pop Omnivore, thanks Marilyn Terrell!

Credit Card Rewards Are Rip-Offs

Posted by Alex in Money & Finance on June 2, 2008 at 2:00 pm

If you’ve ever tried to redeem frequent flier miles from your credit card rewards only to find that it’s nearly impossible to book a flight (or worth the hassle as the airlines want you to fly the most inconvenient flights like red-eye or multiple connections), then you already know this: credit card rewards are a real rip off.

Jessica Dickler of CNN Money has the story:

About 85 percent of U.S. households participate in at least one rewards program, according to a study released Monday by Consumer Reports. And though rewards do spur consumers to spend more, the study found that confusing rules and restrictions make most reward cards more trouble than they’re worth.

"They make it 100 times more complicated," said a former marketing executive at CitiCards, referring to the popular rewards programs. For example, when you read the fine print, you might find that some rewards are limited to certain brands, or expire if not used within a certain timeframe.

Teenage Cannabis Smoker More Likely to Develop Schizophrenia

Posted by Alex in Medicine on June 2, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Still think that cannabis is harmless? Here’s another reason why you shouldn’t smoke pot: scientists found that teenage cannabis smoker are more likely to suffer psychotic symptoms and full-blown mental illness later in life.

Adolescent drug takers interviewed for the largest study of its kind reported experiencing at least three symptoms indicating a risk of psychosis.

These included feeling like something strange or inexplicable was taking place, suspecting they were being influenced or followed and difficulty in controlling the speed of thoughts.

Frequent drug users were more at risk but even youngsters dabbling at an early stage were vulnerable.

The researchers also found taking cannabis in adolescence creates a greater risk of developing schizophrenia than using it when older.

Butt-cooling Seat

Posted by Miss Cellania in Gadget on June 2, 2008 at 9:58 am

The Suzukaze seat cushion keeps your butt cool as you work. For about five cents a day, a fan blows air through the cushion to keep you comfortable. You may work in an air-conditioned office now, but when energy costs cause your employer to think twice about turning it on, you’ll thank me for this. Link -via Digg

Quadriplegic Sailor

Posted by Miss Cellania in Sports on June 2, 2008 at 9:51 am

36-year-old Hilary Lister is paralyzed from the neck down, but that hasn’t stopped her from participating in her love of sailing. In 2005, she became the first quadriplegic sailor to cross the English Channel. Her next goal is to sail around Britain solo, using her breath to pilot a 20-foot boat.

She is planning to start her trip in Dover, in her boat, the Artemis 20, on 9 June.

It is anticipated the clockwise journey, which will be taken in a series of day sails, will take three to four months.

Mrs Lister has been paralysed for seven years as a result of a progressive degenerative disease, reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

A rigid inflatable boat will support her on the journey and a motor entourage of two motor homes and a Land Rover will provide land support.

Strange and Wonderful Vending Machines

Posted by Miss Cellania in Gadget, Neatorama Only on June 2, 2008 at 5:42 am

You name it, and somewhere there’s a place where you can buy it right out of a machine! Let’s take a look at some of the weirder vending machines you can stick your money into.

Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana can be purchased from a vending machine in California. Yes, you have to have a prescription. In order to use the machines, you have to have an ID card, and you’ll be fingerprinted and photographed by a security guard at the machine site. See a video report here.

Nathan’s Hot Dogs

Nathan’s Famous hot dogs in Coney Island is the site of the annual July 4th hot dog eating contest. Soon, New Yorkers will be able to get the famous dogs from a vending machine! They’ll be kosher, as the machines are run by Kosher Vending Industries, which already makes kosher pizza and other items available by machine. Only selected Nathan’s locations currently sell dogs with rabbinical oversight.

iPods

The Atlanta airport is home to a Zoom Shop machine that sells iPod Minis and Shuffles, along with batteries and digital cameras. There are similar machines at other airports. Have your credit card ready, this probably doesn’t take quarters! (image credit: sbisson)

Pet Supplies

The Hey Buddy! company makes vending machines that sell dog supplies, such as dog food, leashes, flea collars, chew toys, treats, waste bag holders and refills, and purified water. Check for a location near you.

Live Bait

Fishermen get up and go earlier than bait shop owners prefer, so the idea of a live bait vending machine makes sense, even if it seems weird. In 1993, fisherman Joe Meyer converted an old sandwich machine to a bait machine and sold it to a shop owner, who now has 30 machines and sells 10,000 night crawlers every week! Bait machines are refrigerated, and the bait is sealed in plastic bags with an oxygen tablet added.

Crow Food

They don’t expect you to buy food for crows; this machine is for the crows to use! The point of the experiment is to create a device that will train crows to pick up change dropped on the ground and exchange it for peanuts, using this specially-designed vending machine. See a video here.

Pornography, Beer, and Eggs

Japan is vending machine heaven. You can get pretty much anything you like from vending machines. Sometimes a row of vending machines will replace an entire store! There are vending machines that sell pornography, bread in a can, and even fresh eggs. There are reports of fetish items still for sale in Japanese vending machines, if you know where to look.

Cigarette for Adults Only

Cigarette machines are only seen in antique stores in America these days, but they are still used in japan, where the legal age to buy tobacco is twenty. New technology is being developed to keep underage smokers from using the machines. New machines require a “taspo” (tobacco passport) card, an ID issued by the Tobacco Institute of Japan. Manufacturer Fujitaka has another machine in development that uses face-recognition software to “see” how old the buyer is. The face recognition is around 90% accurate in judging a person’s age. It has yet to be approved for public use.

Toilet Paper

No, you don’t get to go for free everywhere. Some places still have coin-operated toilets. In Japan, you can use the facilities, but you’ll have to pay for the paper, at least in some public areas. But you might get lucky: Japanese businesses often hand out free samples as part of their advertising budget, since the individual packets have advertising printed on them.

Live Lobster Claw Game

This machine in Osaka is not exactly a vending machine -it’s a claw game! You pay your money and test your skills at catching a live lobster, which is also the prize. Have fun carrying it home!

Coke

Vending machines are so popular in Japan that they’ve been made into a popular toy, which in turn was the inspiration for these life size Coke Bots!
