WOW, wow, what a blatantly ignorant quote. I assume this is taken WILDLY out of context wherein for a very slim and properly defined meaning of "security" it would be appropriate. One, the herd mentality of zebras and water buffalo protecting each other (versus the ones singled out which become lunch) is security in nature. Two, apes and monkeys that are healty and social are safer; loners are not.

The notion that a "safe" life cannot be a full or adventurous life is ridiculous and just plain wrong.

Lame nonsense, Kristin Elder. Having a dog is four times more effective than having a home security system. And that is more effective than not having one.

But if you avoid danger, you are more likely to live longer or experience a higher quality of life. Not all consequences of danger kill-- some of it leaves you permanently disabled/disfigured/in pain for several decades. Sure, society is stupid about trying to bubble-wrap everything, but we shouldn't in turn rush headlong into danger for no reason.

"Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure"

Oh thank you thank you thank you for this wonderful quote. It is such a breath of fresh air in our increasingly security obsessed society. The measures we take and the rights we are willing to give up for something so ephemeral as the illusion of security is an extremely troubling trend.
