Kobe Bryant Speaking Italian

Posted by Alex in Sports, Video Clips on May 27, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Here’s something I didn’t know about Kobe Bryant, the 2008 NBA MVP: he speaks fluent Italian! When he was 6 years old, Kobe’s father moved his family to Italy to play professional basketball there. There, Kobe learned to speak Italian and play soccer.

I don't follow pro basketball much, but this is one fact I knew! I read his biography when he was drafted right out of high school.

He seems to speak Italian better than he does English

    From the wiki:
"When [Kobe] was six, his father left the NBA, moved his family to Italy, and started playing professional basketball there. Bryant became accustomed to the lifestyle there and learned to speak fluent Italian. At an early age, he learned to play soccer and at first his favorite team was AC Milan."

Ohhh, che bello! He is very eloquent in Italian. I have such respect for a man who speaks a language fluently that isn't part of his heritage. :)

This is neat because it challenges our biases, I suppose.
I remember being in Italy, and Japanese tourists trying to speak to me in Italian. It struck me as odd, since it seemed so incongruous.

Ha ha. We use to go in the same school in Reggio Calabria, Italy. His father was hired in the local basketball team the Viola baskball. I remenber we use to play basketball together. All of us against him and he always win! that's why he learn to play soccer

Well, not so fluent after all but he was a child when he left, so that's enough!. In ogni caso è una sorpresa inaspettata e piacevole :-)
