Buy a Car? Get a Free Handgun!

Posted by Alex in Car & Vehicle, Politics, Weapons & War on May 26, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Some car dealership offers free oil changes, some offer cash rebate, but not Max Motors: they offer a free handgun with every vehicle sold (or a gas card, but so far almost all have chosen the firearm) …

Owner Mark Muller said: "We’re just damn glad to live in a free country where you can have a gun if you want to."

The dealership sells new and old vehicles, including General Motors and Ford cars and trucks, and its logo shows a cowboy holding a pistol.

It has sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the past three days, an increase which the owners put down to their promotional offer.

Mr Muller said that every buyer so far "except one guy from Canada and one old guy" chose the gun, rather than the gas card. (Source)

I wouldn’t want to be this guy when (and it’s only a matter of time) one of these guns kills some innocent.

“I wouldn’t want to be this guy when (and it’s only a matter of time) one of these guns kills some innocent.”

Exactly right, these evil guns need to be locked up before they harm someone.

Of course that’s completely absolving the criminal behind the firearm of any responsibility for his actions, but what’s personal responsibility when there’s an inanimate tool to be blamed for a crime.

No weapon ever made killed anyone without a hand and an arm and a body with a mind to choose to wield it for harm. No gun, knife, pointy stick or rock is capable of harm without the will of the user.

Learn to place blame where it belongs.

Yeah. Can’t have one of those crazy guns going wild, loading itself, pointing itslef at someone and pulling it’s own trigger.

Moron. The firearm is merely an appliance, a useful tool. Assuming local regulations are followed, the dealer is no more liable (morally or legally) than if someone runs down an innocent pedestrian with one of those cars he’s sold.

‘An armed society maintains the peace, defends the weak, and ensures liberty.’

…coz thats worked out so well in the past. Peace: it seems like America and its guns are ‘needed’ for peace. Defends the Weak: you can quite easily exchange the term Defends with Exploits, and as for ensuring Liberty: that only extends to a certain few…
patriotism can bind people together, but quite easily can it blind them too.

I have no idea why such a big deal has been made of this. No, the guy isn’t giving free guns out right there - he’s basically giving away a gift certificate, and the recipient must pass a background check. The dealership is in an area of the US where legal gun ownership is common, and most of the purchasers already legally own firearms.

As far as it only being “a matter of time” before “one of these guns kills some innocent,” the purchaser would have to have a clean record, (believe it or not, those who use guns in crimes steal them or purchase them illegally) If such a gun-runner was going to purchase firearms to sell illegally, do you think he/she would go through the trouble of spending $10k+ on a car just to get one small pistol, and leave the trail of paperwork that a background check creates?

Some incident in the future may occur that divides American society and if a serious conflict develops…..all those guns.

    Tony, stop being reasonable!

You know guns only exist to turn otherwise decent people into stone killers. If there were no guns, no one would ever die. No one is ever stabbed or clubbed or pushed out of 6th story windows, never happens unless a gun is trying to hide its crime.

And what’s 10k when there’s a gun attached? Surely these bloodthirsty brigands are only there to purchase a car for the getaway after the gun goes on a killing spree.

Hoplophobes just make my blood boil.

It’s a tool, I keep one in my purse and I have never killed, wanted to kill or even thought of killing anyone. Not even those poor benighted individuals who would rather me be disarmed so I can be raped and murdered instead of being empowered to fighting off anyone who might decide to do me harm.

I refuse to be a victim regardless of what the vocal gun fearing minority wants for me.

I know guns don’t shoot themselves… But still… Why give away a gun with a car? Seems pretty ridiculous… I suppose it’s just a shame we live in a world where we feel as though as though we need this level of protection to keep us safe.

I would buy a car from this guy just to tick off the anti-gun crowd.

We should worry more about fighting crime than about restricting guns. Gun violence is a symptom of a crime problem, not about having too many guns.

Wow, that’s absolutely frightening. Where is this place again so I don’t ever have to worry about the stray gunfire from the road-rage inflicted bumpkins?

It should be noted that the vehicles in this story are more likely to kill or injure someone than are the legally purchased firearms. I doubt that any one would dream of blaming the car or the dealer for traffic accidents as they are clearly the fault of the driver.

The same goes for the weapons. They can be owned and used legally and responsibly. Ensuring that they are is the responsibility of the gun owner not the dealer or the manufacturer or anyone else who’s finger isn’t on the trigger.

Doesn’t a free gun with the purchase of a car seem a bit like it’s (subconsciously) promoting road rage?

“I wouldn’t want to be this guy when (and it’s only a matter of time) one of these guns kills some innocent.”

More likely the car will kill someone.

“Wow, that’s absolutely frightening. Where is this place again so I don’t ever have to worry about the stray gunfire from the road-rage inflicted bumpkins?”

Here in Michigan hundreds of thousands of us carry guns all the time. We don’t have any shootings by “road rage inflicted bumpkins” It’s been legal for almost anyone over 21 to carry a gun here for 6 years, and the only effect we’ve seen is a drop in violent crime.
