i disagree with you completely with return of the living dead, wait till you watch all of these movies requested, and then you will look back and appreciate return of the living dead,
movies to watch, zombie, boy eats girl, city of the dead, chudd, cemetery man, and movies soon to be released, zombies zombies zombies (aka zombie vs strippers), zombie strippers.

Plan 9 from Outer Space, of course! Technically fulfills moth criterion, but what the hey:

White zombie, the first zombie film ever made, is on Google Video. Made in 1932, so copyrights have long since expired. This means it is completely legal to stream off the internet.

Flight of the Living Dead is AWESOME. They got it when they made this film. They play by the rules; headshots kill, the zombies are nonsentient fleshdevouring abominations, and the black dude is a badass.

Also, if you haven't already, the Evil Dead series. Watch them in order, if possible.

Gotta second the recommendation for Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. It's done in handheld nauseacam style to try to look like a home movie and it would be the perfect fodder for MST3K treatment. It's full of predictably stupid characters you want to kill yourself, ridiculous outfits, the works. I confess it did scare the crap out of me when I was 14. Now I look back and laugh... so long as the lights are on.

Undead was awesome and along the lines of Shaun of the Dead.

Also of course Evil dead series, the first two more than the third (the 3rd, army of darkness is not scary at all and isn't very funny imho either), they have both some scary gotcha moments and lots of humor.

Fido which is newish and very Shaun of the dead, a Horror/comedy

I love horror flicks too (to the point that before we do to the video store I get 'the talk' about not hiring anything with zombies or ghosts - never works)

My favourite movie of all time: Braindead - aka Dead Alive, as mentioned before - IT IS LOVE. This has been my favourite movie for YEARS (I'm from NZ, where Peter Jackson is from and so it was more widely available than in the rest of the world). You have to have to have to see it. Lets just say that after Braindead I was thoroughly disappointed in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings because I know the genius that he is capable of, and LOTR just wasn't it.

My least favourite: Killer Clowns from Outer Space. They turn people into giant coloured pears and suck their, like, essence or whatever out through straws. May not be as bad if you're expecting it to be bad, but on the night of my birthday sleepover all those years ago, we were expecting a little more.

Watch Braindead. Love Braindead. BEST MOVIE EVER EVER!!

Whoever mentioned Shatter Dead should be seconded. I don't know if it's good or bad, but it certainly was one of the hardest to stomache I've ever seen. You've got everything from zombie fetus shot out of a pregnant zombie, to a sex scene with a gun done in too-graphic detail, to the usual parade of pink-red to mottled purple grey-skinned burn victim zombies. Couple this with some of the most deadpan acting I've ever seen (most of the leads were apparantly up well past their bedtimes)and strange paranoid schizophrenic pseudo philosophy, and you've got a movie that is too strange for even cult status.

This is so confusing. Are you aware that Return of the Living Dead was an absolutely huge film when it came out and a favorite mid-1980s rental amongst campy film buffs. I was in high school at the time and probably saw the film a dozen times. I understand that many people are not 40, but jiminy, this film is very well-known.

Day of the Dead II: Contagium for both answers. It is a film made by Romero fans about what happens when an alien zombie contaminant gets released into a mental health facility. With its cast of shoddy actors, its offensively bad storyline, and its extremely confusing ending it wins the day for worst horror/zombie film I have ever seen (much worse than return of the living dead).

On the plus side, it is also the single goriest film I have ever seen. Hands down. Nothing has ever shown so many going from alive and well to giblets without a tasteful cut-away.

Trust me when I say, none of the above mentioned movies hold a candle (or a torch) to Shatter Dead tho I kinda wish they would *grin* a straight to video zombie movie I had the dubious pleasure of being dead in. Terrible yet ridiculous beyond belief. Apparently there is no room in heaven anymore, so the souls continue to inhabit their dead bodies. Nekkid pregnant angels, dead lesbian encounters, and a lead actress who has less facial expression and affect than the walking dead. Trust me when I say there is no cheesier, horrible zombie flick.

While I was just an unpaid extra, I did manage to get my face on the advertisements and the back cover. Eeeek. What a thing to tell my grandkids.

It sounds like you enjoyed it for what it was regardless. Otherwise, you wouldn't make such an endeavor to describe it. The intent was a lot of the humor in a winking-at-the-audience/tongue and cheek sense. It placed a lot of the peripheral humor of the Romero films and put it front and center- which is part of it's "love it" or "hate it" following. It also skewered mid-eighties punk and new wave culture and resulted in a decent soundtrack. The eighties were host to a lot of near-sadistic schlock horror/humor films which fostered a lot of the horror culture we enjoy today. Most likely you've seen the Re-Animator, but I'd recommend the "near-sequel" From Beyond. I'm certain you'd great it with a similar and passionate disdain.

I just read "World War Z" and loved it! I'm currently reading "The Zombie Survival Guide" and enjoying that as well. I see someone's recommended the comic series Walking Dead, I'd second that. More Zombie-related reading material: The Undead and Philosophy - Chicken Soup for the Soulless, a collection of philosophical essays on the nature of being undead, focusing on zombies and vampires. Really interesting stuff. The Ultimate Zombie, an anothology of zombie fiction. "Burial Ground" is a particularily awful Italian work, but awful enough to be really funny, it aso contains the creepiest looking child ever put to film. I would rate it as one of the unintentionally funniest zombie films ever made.

Also, Romero's latest is Land of the Dead. It is a really great look at what the world would be like years after zombies take over. John Leguizamo is awesome. Romero is working on another zombie movie now, but until then, Land of the Dead is his most recent.

How in the world could you say ROTLD is horrible. It was (no pun intended) groundbreaking. First zombie film to bring up the whole "I wanna eat your brains"!!!! Send more paramedics!!! The Uneeda medical supply company!! A half zombie dog! And last, but not least, the coolest zombie ever - TARMAN! WOW!

If you want really bad look up Class of 1984.

Return of the Living Dead is awesome. Best zombie movie ever, if you just want to be entertained. Hell yeah. I watched it on IFC a couple weeks ago also. My wife and I are divided - we both love zombie movies but she hated this one while I loved it.

Has no one said Resident Evil? Seriously? That one is pretty good. I personally prefer witchcraft and satan creating zombies over science, but it's still pretty good. The second RE movie is terrible; the third is also pretty bad.
