In addition, some of them, like the roman Coloseum, actually had primitive elevators in them, to transport props and personel for the performances. In August of 2001 I saw Sonic Youth perform at the anfiteatro in Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport. Watching the band play while sitting on 2000-year-old benches added something to the show.
