Black jaguars are panthers. Any jaguar, leopard, or cougar who is born black can be called a black panther.

But would this cub be classified as a panther? He definitely has distinct markings and is not all black…

If you look up close, no black panther jaguars or leopards are completely black and you will still be able to make out their markings. They’re still panthers though. Adult black panther cougars will look blacker as they don’t have as many markings as jaguars and leopards do.

The panther is like a leopard,
    Except it hasn’t been peppered.
Should you behold a panther crouch,
    Prepare to say Ouch.
Better yet, if called by a panther,
    Don’t anther.

    I guess a leopard doesn’t change his spots… but a panther might…

Look at the size of those paws!!! He’ll be huge! (as one would expect of a panther)
