I agree with Dr. Pants. When someone asks about my religion, they typically don't care what I believe, they just want to know what angle to come at me from.

I forget where I heard this one but it always cracks me up:
"I found Jesus! All this time he was behind the couch."

Much to the consternation of my partner I've recently quit going to church. When asked why? I simply say, "Codepency with an ephemeral being simply wasn't working for me."

My father had someone come to the door and ask him "Have you found Jesus?" He said "I had no idea the guy was lost." They never came back.

Dr Pants, you're being too cynical. Or you've met too many Jehovah's Witnesses.

This also works for poetry and other creative writing. People love to share their own poetry, get it published, etc..., but they won't want to read yours.

You have to distinguish between "Honestly want to hear about your religious beliefs" and "Want to know what your r current beliefs are in order to pick the best approach to use to dismantle them and replace them with their own".

Actually, George Barna did a study which suggests that 90% of people who share their faith always ask the other person what they believe. I'm not surprised by people finding Barry's remark funny. It simply seems way off the mark, according to Barna's actual research. I believe he cites the study in Evangelism That Works.

I love Dave Barry, but that holds true with nearly all personal opinions. There is nothing quite so boring as someone else's dreams.
