Trivia: Heisman's Contribution to American Football

Posted by Alex in Daily Trivia, Sports on April 15, 2008 at 12:57 am

Coach John Heisman (yes, of the American football trophy fame) divided the game into quarters, invented the center snap and the "hike" yell, and made popular the forward pass.

Ever year, the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the United States. No Heisman Trophy winner has ever visited John Heisman’s grave in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. (Photo: Robert J. La Verghetta [Wikipedia])

That's an odd fact. Does his grave have 24 hour surveillance with facial recognition software or something?

I was wondering the same thing. Do they ask each past winner on a yearly basis if they have visited his grave?

I bet no one has visited his grave in Rhinelander, Wisconsin because someone relocated his corpse!

This sounds like a job for Scooby Doo and the gang!

I'VE been to Rhinelander, but I was too drunk the whole time to remember if we went to Heisman's grave.

I'm too drunk right now to remember whether or not I won the Heisman trophy.

It's great being drunk, though! :)

so did he invent the word "hike" I think he should have called it something cooler, although it was better than picking, "Ball Me"

So what did hikers do before he invented the word? Just go on long walks?
