This is the best country in the world and it irritates me no end when people piss and moan about how horrible it is. To nygenxer: If I had the money, I'd send every one of you America-hating libs somewhere else. I'd even help you pack!!! But I have to agree with the other posters that you do sound lazy and whiny with a "gimme" attitude instead of finding a way out yourself.

Yeah, why does someone need $100k to go anywhere?
Sneak into Mexico. You could open up a world of travel possibilities into Central and South America.

You do sound whiny and lazy, though.

Nygenxer, my family came over from Mexico with little more than the clothes on their backs. You don't need a fortune to relocate.

Were your hard-working ancestors who immigrated here lazy? Emigrating is about as lazy as putting oneself through college (like I did).

"Proud American" who shows us all what it means to be lazy by reading into what I wrote instead of what I actually wrote. Show me where I am "pissing and moaning."

"Proud American" assumes that I'm a socialist and then lazily stereotypes all socialists as "stupid" - stupid people like Albert Einstein who wrote an essay entitled "Why Socialism?"

If "Proud American" wasn't so busy showing off his laziness, he could've saved himself some embarrassment and done a web search. (Even George Dumbya Bush knows how to "use the google.")

Being lazy like “Proud American” is easy because it doesn't disturb his world view by having to research or think or keep an open mind or to ask questions. Those things are hard and make his head hurt. It's easier and lazier to throw out a few insults and cliches than to open a dialogue.

Cut a check or STFU.

Way to go, nygenxer; as if some of the misconceptions about American people aren't bad enough, and you go and reinforce that we're lazy. If you're so dead set on getting out, use some of that supposed gen-x ingenuity and figure out a way to get your lazy arse across the ocean, or maybe just a couple hundred miles north to Canada. But no, you sit here pissing & moaning and wait for someone to hand it to you on a silver platter.

Stupid socialist.

It seems apt to me.

My neighbor who is French complains and complains about America but continues to live here. It pisses my dad off to no end.

That's a fantastic motto concisely highlighting what the American experiment has gotten right.

I'm not ashamed of my country, I'm ashamed of who's been "leading" it, or should I say, MIS leading it. That is all.

I think it speaks of our enormous self-esteem problems. Half our population seems to hate it here, and yet they remain. Seattle is one of the least patriotic cities I've ever been to, and we don't have a lot of civic pride neither. It bothers me that I have to defend my country in a conversation with /another inhabitant of my country./ Not only that, but people expect me to join in on their gratuitous America-bashing, just because I'm a gay liberal limey doesn't mean I don't love my adopted homeland.

Tomas-
If that is your impression of how things are in the US, you have gotten a load of wrong information. As an American who has done quite a bit of traveling abroad, I prefer it here because the government, even in times like this, is far less intrusive and totalitarian than some countries in Western Europe. And for anyone who would complain about American corruption, I would point them towards two of the most corrupt governments in the last hundred years: Mexico and Nigeria.

Yes, well, I'd like to twist that a bit: I am also a critic of America (though by far not the worst one) and I also prefer to stay... outside the us. I am not American and, at least currently, will avoid entering the country. I'd be treated like a criminal on entry and inside it is not much better (compare a cop stopping you in your car in the USA to, say, Scandinavia to see what I mean).
