Assault with ... Hedgehog!

This has got to be one of the strangest crimes ever: an assault with ... (poor) hedgehog!

Police said William Singalargh, 27, had hurled the hedgehog about 5m (16ft) at a 15-year-old boy.

"It hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks," said Senior Sgt Bruce Jenkins, in the North Island town of Whakatane.

It was unclear whether the hedgehog was still alive when it was thrown, though it was dead when collected as evidence.

The police spokesman said the suspect was arrested "for assault with a weapon, namely the hedgehog."

Poor hedgehog. :( Wonder if they could autopsy it and charge him for animal abuse, too, if it wasn't already dead when it was thrown (but then why did he have a dead hedgehog...?).

Ouch. I think if they want to slap on a few more charges they go ahead and look at animal cruelty and unsanitary disposal of an animal corpse.

I own hedgehogs and it HAD to be alive when thrown in order to have made puncture wounds, it puffs up when threatened, rolls into a ball causing the quills to stick out. DAMN I hope they charge this IDIOT with animal cruelty as well. Poor Hedggie and kid, that musta hurt.

wonder if it was the kid's hedgehog, even more cruel...

We have no problems about aiming our vehicles at the poor little blighters on our roads (not that I do), but throw one at a 15 year old and the world spits spines (get it?...spits tax?...The wife said not to comment)!
