That lighthouse story was allegedly the inspiration for a Doctor Who story back in the seventies. IIRC it was called The Horror of Fang Rock.

Another lighthouse story, which is not a disappearance, but bizarre none the less, is that of the Smalls Light. Search for Howell and Griffith on the Smalls Light.

Anastasia was the daughter of a Russian Tsar. She was murdered with her family in 1918 and was rumored she escaped because the location of bodies were unknown. In 1997 the bodies of her mother, father, And three sisters were recovered. Anastasia and her brother were not buried among them, leaving speculation that she had escaped - especially with Anna Anderson claimed she was the missing Anastasia (she was found in a foster home). She maintained that she was Anastasia until her death. The charred bodies of two children were found in 2007 - forensics proving it was Anastasia and her brother, and that all the Romanov bodies were accounted for - discrediting Anna Anderson.

I agree with Carl. The years just don't add up.

Also, the reader have forgotten about Anastasia. I don't know if it was based on actual events, but it sure is sad.

I would explain what happened, but it would be better if you watched the movie. By the way, it is animated. Just thought I would let you know.

Dorothy Arnold's case is the most speculative. Did she commit suicide, because she was frustrated with her lack of success with her writing and her failed romantic prospects? Or was she the victim of a assault/murder, possibly by someone she knew?

There was speculation that DB Cooper and Richard McCoy were the same individual.

The vanishing at Hanging Rock is a work of fiction that's fooled many people into believing that the event really occurred. Rather like Bierce's "Oliver Larch" disappearance tale, which tends to get reported as fact.

Richard Colvin Cox is probably one of the better modern mysteries -- who was 'George', what did he do to Cox and why did he do it? Mary Shotwell Little's disappearance from Atlanta, GA in the 1960's in another bonafide 'what the hell happened?'.

The listed disappearances are interesting but two hundred years ago it was easy to disappear since photography had not been invented and news was very slow to travel. It is said that the majority of the people who voted for Lincoln did not know know what he looked like.

More appropriate cases would be Judge Crater, Cadet Richard Cox, and Jimmy Hoffa.

What about Richard Colvin Cox, the West Point cadet who vanished from the grounds in January 1950? He was never found. Such incidents as these do fascinate me, including the controversial ones including possibly fictitious people such as David Lang, Oliver Larch and James Worson. And, group vanishings, like the crew of the "Mary Celeste" are extremely unnerving.

Chaucer, considered England's greatest poet prior to Shakespeare, disappeared from the historical records around 1400, the year usually given as his presumed death. But actually, nobody knows what happened to him.

I have to agree, Frederick Valentich is a case that perplexes me. It could be argued that he crashed into Bass Strait. However, the recorded conversation with Air Traffic Control, and other witnesses to strange objects in the sky, adds an air of mystery to this.

What Shrike said... Ambrose Bierce should be mandatory...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Bierce

In October 1913 the septuagenarian Bierce departed Washington, D.C., for a tour of his old Civil War battlefields. By December he had proceeded on through Louisiana and Texas, crossing by way of El Paso into Mexico, which was in the throes of revolution. In Ciudad Juárez he joined Pancho Villa's army as an observer, and in that role participated in the battle of Tierra Blanca.

Bierce is known to have accompanied Villa's army as far as the city of Chihuahua. After a last letter to a close friend, sent from there December 26, 1913, he vanished without a trace, becoming one of the most famous disappearances in American literary history. Several writers have subscribed to the speculation that he actually headed north to the Grand Canyon, found a remote spot there and shot himself, though no shred of actual evidence exists to support this view. All investigations into his fate have proved fruitless, and despite an abundance of theories his end remains shrouded in mystery. The date of his death is generally cited as "1914?".

In one of his last letters, Bierce wrote the following to his niece, Lora:

"Good-bye — if you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags please know that I think that a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexico — ah, that is euthanasia!"

In October 1913 the septuagenarian Bierce departed Washington, D.C., for a tour of his old Civil War battlefields. By December he had proceeded on through Louisiana and Texas, crossing by way of El Paso into Mexico, which was in the throes of revolution. In Ciudad Juárez he joined Pancho Villa’s army as an observer, and in that role participated in the battle of Tierra Blanca.

Bierce is known to have accompanied Villa’s army as far as the city of Chihuahua. The date of his death is generally cited as “1914?”.

In one of his last letters, Bierce wrote the following to his niece, Lora:

“Good-bye — if you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags please know that I think that a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexico — ah, that is euthanasia!”

Love the article. One correction on the D.B. Cooper segment. Some bills were actually found.

February 1980
Brian Ingram, an 8-year-old boy, finds $5,800 in decomposing $20 bills by the edge of the Columbia River near Vancouver, Washington. The FBI matches the serial numbers on those bills to the Cooper ransom. It is the only Cooper money ever to be recovered.

Don't forget Glenn Miller, disappeared in 1944. It was during wartime, though, so not as mysterious. Still don't know what happened, though.

Here in Australia our greatest disappearance for a public figure was:

Harold Edward Holt, CH (5 August 1908 – 17 December 1967) was an Australian politician who became the 17th Prime Minister of Australia in 1966. His term as Prime Minister dramatically ended in December of the following year when he disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea and was presumed drowned.

Holt spent 32 years in Parliament, including many years as a senior Cabinet Minister, but was Prime Minister for only 22 months. This necessarily limited his personal and political impact, especially when compared to his immediate predecessor Robert Menzies, who was PM for a total of 18 years.

"In 1897, John sailed back to England for supplies and assistance for the colony. When he returned in 1890, everything was gone except for the infamous “CROATOAN” carved on a tree."

Those dates don't seem quite right.
