Running of the Reindeers

Pamplona, Spain, has the famous Running of the Bulls. There are no bulls in Anchorage, Alaska, so they have to make do with reindeers. Here’s the story from last week’s running of the reindeers called "Fur Rendezvouz":

The animals proved more than game, defying predictions that they would be too domesticated and docile to put on a good show.

Starting in the middle of the street behind several rows of runners, they built speed quickly. After less than a block, they were weaving through people like ski racers on a slalom course. By the time they neared the finish line — where two "bait" reindeer stood, plus trailers filled with treats and straw — they were moving fast and looking almost manic.

Tom Williams, who runs the Williams Reindeer Farm in the Butte and brought a dozen of his best beasts for the show, wasn’t surprised.

"They make their living outrunning wolves," he said.

    Actually, Fur Rendezvous is the winter carnival held each year in Anchorage right around the time of the start of the Iditarod. I wasn't there, but I'm guessing the running of the reindeer happened during the two weeks or so of Rondy.

    The plural of reindeer is reindeer.

    You can tell this doesn't carry the danger factor of running with bulls; look at how close the spectators are to the action. And I doubt you'd have someone taking a picture of himself in Pamplona.

    I hope someone got an antler stuck in their no-no spot. I'm sure the reindeer LOVE the confusion and screaming people. This is cruel.

    Actually Dave, Alex and you are both correct as to the spelling of pluralized "reindeer". From Answers.com:
    rein·deer (r?n'dîr')
    n., pl. reindeer or -deers.
    A large deer (Rangifer tarandus) of the Arctic and northern regions of Eurasia and North America, having branched antlers in both sexes.

    ooh, here in albuquerque, we should have a running of the lobos...or is this running-of-the thing strictly limited to herbivores? picture it! wolves running like crazy, and people running like crazy to avoid getting rabies!

    You want proof that plural of "reindeer" is "reindeer"? Check the lyrics for "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer";

    ... All of the other reindeer
    Used to laugh and call him names.
    They never let poor Rudolph
    Join in any reindeer games.

    Then one foggy Christmas Eve
    Santa came to say,
    "Rudolph with your nose so bright
    Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
    Then all the reindeer loved him
    And they shouted out with glee...

    Try singing that with "reindeers" instead. Sorry, but it just sounds wrong, in a song or in a sentence.

    I would take part in a 'running' only if it was something I could actually outrun.
