How does the bishop move through the center?
I see three black squares with their corners touching.
Does it get to choose?

The link goes to a post explaining all the moves, with pictures of possible paths. Yes, the bishop can choose which direct path to take through the center.

I own one of these boards, and playing on it is a complete mindfuck… at least for the first few games. It’s a lot harder, and a lot of fun.

I have had that exact same board for years and years, and my dad, my brother and I have never managed to finish a game. We all find it confusing around the middle …

Chess variants are like any other type of knockoffs, dull and lifeless when compared to the REAL thing.

My brother has one of those. The strategical part is really interesting : since the first one to checkmate any opponent wins, if you are about to do so, the third opponent is going to team up with the would-be-checkmated to save themselves. Tricky, but it goes for a well balanced game.
Try it with “Tempete sur l’echiquier” (http://www.chessvariants.com/cards.dir/tempete.html, “Knightmare Chess” for the English version of the game) Headache incomimg!
