And yet other studies show that adults that sleep more then 7 hours nightly have nearly twice the mortality rate of those that routinely sleep 8 hours or more.
Just another reason to AVOID that snooze button.

Hawaii, Delaware, Rhode Island and New York? That is a freakishly random choice of states for a ‘representative’ sample.

Oops, meant to say that people who sleep 7 hours a night have HALF the mortality rate of people who sleep 8 or more hours a night.

Boy, I hear that. And I don’t know about anyone else but so much stuff goes when I don’t get enough sleep - keeping track of my money, eating right, basic sanity…!

I don’t understand why so many people have this obsession with getting by with as little sleep as possible like it’s something to boast about.
YOU DON’T REALIZE IT, BUT YOUR JUDGMENT, REACTION TIME, EMOTIONAL STATE, AND MENTAL QUICKNESS ARE IMPAIRED WHEN YOU DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP.
Do yourself and the world a favor and just go to bed an hour or two earlier.

With a newborn baby, sleep is non-existent. And I am one crabby momma when I get less than 4 hours…thank goodness he’s started to sleep through the night a bit…at 5 weeks.

i’m eager to find out how this compares to other countries. i do know that the US is a service industry these days and on average, we work more than any other country. europeans work an average of 35 hours a week, where we work 40. they are granted an average of 5 weeks of vacation and an extra one if they happen to have a baby that year. we get an average of 2 weeks. women are offered a full year of maternity leave as well as her husband, but not many males take the entire time. also, because they have a universal healthcare system, they can be issued a nanny to help take care of their newborn at no cost to the family. we work like dogs, yet remain surprised when statistics come out saying we don’t get enough sleep. well DUH! we are also the most obese country in the world. the most selfish. the most discriminatory and racist against people unlike us. it’s exhausting to be this evil! maybe we would be a better country if we got more sleep. i need more coffee…

oooo i just thought of this too– i wonder how crime rates correlate with sleep patterns, considering people are less rational when they lack sleep. you would think crime rates would be higher in those regions people aren’t getting enough sleep. the US is full of crime AND we don’t get enough sleep… COINCIDENCE?!
