Nubrella: The Hands Free Umbrella

Posted by Alex in Fashion, Gadget, Pictures on February 27, 2008 at 6:50 am

Nubrella, the hands free umbrella, looks like a giant transparent Pac-Man chomping down on your head. The company hailed it as "the umbrella of the 21st century" and "the ultimate weather protector."

The umbrella is worn with adjustable shoulder strap and can stops rain, wind, and snow while keeping your arms free to shoo away curious people.

Too bad it looks like it doesn't cover your arms. It's about time someone found a way to innovate the umbrella concept.

Hey! *I* invented that! Okay, I didn't actually implement it, but I had the same idea. Mostly stemmed from the need to be able to carry baby and/or baggage at once without anyone getting soaked. Mine didn't come so far over the front, though.
Just proves that Big Brother is watching. And stealing my ideas!

The umbrella is an example of modern technology that obviously sucks but is hard to redesign pragmatically. I'm skeptical about this anti-rain globe: There are too few pictures of it in action, the opening and closing of it looks like a big hassle, and it looks like it might not be as pleasant to wear for the tall or large-chested.

Plus the site's writing is TERRIBLE, and that is never a good sign.

My problem with umbrellas is that a big gust of wind messes it up. I can't imagine this thing staying still in that same situation.

it seems to me that the water would run to the edge and drip all over your clothes

You'd be wrapping an aluminum cage around your upper body. That can't be safe in a thunder storm.

That looks like a safety hazard, what you fell and got that thing wrapped around your neck? Sure, you could poke out someone's eyes with a regular umbrella but at least the hurting is directed at other people.

    Erm...

One of the advantages to my, apparently old-fashioned, umbrella is that it not only keeps rain off my head but also off THE ENTIRE REST OF MY BODY!

Okay, not like, the last few inches of my pants, or my shoes, but close enough.

In the end, it just comes off as a less-efficient, and (surprisingly) even sillier-looking version of the "umbrella hat."

I liked the 70s clear bubble umbrellas that covered half your body. YOu still had to hold them, but they kept you dry.
