Violinist Fell and Smashed $1 Million Stradivarius

By Alex in Music on Feb 22, 2008 at 1:52 am

Bad: Violinist David Garrett fell.
Worse: It was down a flight of stairs.
Luckily: His violin case broke his fall.
Just when you thought everything was going to be okay (The Final Reversal): Inside was a $1 million Stradivarius which was smashed to bits!

Ouch! That was one expensive fall: Link – via One Large Prawn

Ouch. And there’s only a limited number of them available.
That was probably the worst fall ever. I bet the guy was wishing he broke his legs instead.
Perhaps he should have invested in a stronger case?

His was a Guadagnini violin. He was lent a Stradivarius when he smashed his. Guadagnini was a student and maker for Stradivarius.

“The broken violin was made by Italian craftsman GB Guadagnini, who referred to himself as an “alumnus of Stradivarius”.

That’s right off the BBC article

It says he’s getting it fixed.

I would say the real final reversal would be that it was heavily insured.

He’s lucky, whats money without health?

it’s a near certainty that it’s insured for the full appraised value (which, depending on the market and the appraiser, could be more than it would actually bring if he sold it). he doesn’t need to worry about money at all — just finding another instrument suited to his tastes.

I bet he felt quite befiddled!

I looked him up, then heard him play on several clips on Youtube, and came to the conclusion that it’s his violin who committed suicide to put an end to the misery this guy was putting it through. Maybe it’d be best if Garrett replaces it with a punching ball or something else he can relate to better.
