In the 1980's I worked in the local hospital in Labor and Delivery. My job was to place the placenta in a heavy duty plastic bag and then into a paper sack and put it in a deep freezer. Once a month a cosmetic company came by and picked them up to use them in make-up and lipstick!!! This was in the early to mid 80's!!!

My mother worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse for 20+ years. She told me once that before modern coagulating agents were developed, a mother who had just given birth and was hemorrhaging, would be given a bit of the placenta to eat which increased the clotting factor of her blood.

I've seen lots of hair products with placenta (human or otherwise).
And to thegeekyruler: many animals eat their own placenta for a few reasons: one is to get rid of any scent of blood as soon as possible to prevent predators from finding them or the babies (felines of all sizes do this and other animals) and also, a female who has just given birth is not able to hunt/forage for food and so the placenta serves as an immediate form of nutrition to sustain both the mother and the babies, because if the mother is not getting some sort of nutrition, neither are the babies.
I have heard, though I would not do it, of human women eating their own placentas after they have given birth.

On a side note: In danish a placenta is called a "Moderkage", wich translates directly to "Mothercake". :-)

many multivitamins contain contents from human placentas. hospitals take the birth placenta, dehydrate it, grind it up and sell it to pharmaceutical companies.

actually, animal placenta is not an uncommon ingredient in body creams. Lots of creams in the asia-pacific region have this ingredient, its been around for a long time.

I know in Europe wealthy women buy face creams made from placentas or babies' foreskins' because they think it will make them look younger. I don't even want to think about how much one of those creams costs...

I think the crystal comes in because you have to be on crystal meth to even think about eating a placenta or putting it on your face. Honestly, if you've ever seen a placenta come out, your first thought isn't, "Hey! That would look so good on my skin!" I know that was never my first thought.
