Gorillas Also Mate Face to Face

Posted by Alex in Animal, Science & Tech on February 13, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Scientists have always thought that humans and the Bonobo are the two primate species that mate face to face. Well, they’ve just been proven wrong.

Thomas Breuer of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and colleagues have just snapped the very first photo of gorillas mating face-to-face.

Great news. But why does one single episode caught on tape prove “them” wrong? It is obviously not normative for gorillas to mate face to face…as it is for humans.

Bonobos and humans aren’t the only two animals to mate face to face. I’m sure that there is a type of sloth which does too (either two-toed or three-toed)… at least that is what my science teacher told me and he used to be a naturalist, so I trust him.
I don’t know though, it’s not really an area I’ve done much research in ^_^

That’s all fine & good, but where’s the footage of the male grunting “Who’s yer primate!”
