By Miss Cellania in Science & Tech, Weapons & War on Feb 11, 2008 at 11:15 am

150_sun_gunDuring World War II, Nazi scientists worked at a secret lab in Hillersleben to develop weapons of mass destruction. One of these proposed weapons was the Sun Gun, a space station that would focus the sun’s rays on the enemies of the Third Reich! Read the story at Damn Interesting. Link

Isn’t there a Gary Larson’s far side comic where an alien is using a giant magnifying glass to burn humans?

Well, if such a comic exists, this article reminds me of it. o.O

I think I remember that! Wasn’t it two giant alien kids just having fun?

That would have been a better article if they had taken the time to point out some of the oh-so-many ways that would have been impossible. It most likely still is.

This reminds me of the Solarbonite weapon in Plan 9 from Outer Space. The aliens were trying to stop humans from creating it because it would mean the end of the universe.

Didn’t they do this in one of the James Bond movies?

The Giant Nazi Heat-Ray Space Station Parabola would be a good name for a rock band.

Without a practical method of delivery into space, the point seems rather moot.

Ah, but they had a method of delievery to space: The V2. In theory it could deliever half a ton into orbit. Here is a link to a videoclip with a V2 filming the earth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emMIM3CKGtQ

Makes you a bit dizzy, though. :-)

On a more realistic note, Hitler should probably have used the resources on more appliable and already proven technology. Winter uniforms for the soldiers, for example.

Only if mankind could them a chance, but no one would allow that. Instead of giving up to them without a fight they decide to star war. Germany was and still is the most innovative country in the world.
