Retro Valentines at Hearts Atwirl

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on February 8, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Hearts Atwirl has a very neat collection of vintage valentines from the early to mid 20th century. Some are very cute, some don’t make much sense and others are plain old creepy and racially offensive (sign o’ the times…)

What Happens if Your Brain is Split in Two?

Posted by Alex in Medicine, Video Clips on February 8, 2008 at 7:24 pm

To reduce the severity of Joe’s epileptic seizure, doctors performed a drastic brain surgery: they cut the corpus callosum and severed the connection between his left and right cerebral hemispheres. Here’s what happened …

Bizarro: Terror Threat, The Ride

Posted by Alex in Bizarro Comic, Politics on February 8, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Dan Piraro’s comic Bizarro is like reductio ad absurdum put in cartoon format (well, close enough). Do you agree with this panel? Is the Terror Threat Level useful?

For more Bizarro, check out Dan’s website and blog.

Mark Twain on Film

Silent film footage taken in 1909 by Thomas Edison at Stormfield (CT) at Mark Twain’s estate. Twain is shown walkng around his home and playing cards with his daughters Clara and Jean. The flickering is due to film deterioration, but this is the only known footage of the great author.

Amelia: Amazing Ballet by La La La Human Steps

Posted by Alex in Movies & SciFi, Sports, Video Clips on February 8, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Amelia is a 2002 dance film by Edouard Lock – the dance routine is astoudingly fast. It is simply a technical tour de force.

The dancers are from Montreal dance company La La La Human Steps, the music is composed of Lou Reed lyrics with music by David Lang (a major contributor to the score for Requiem for a Dream) and the wooden stage was created just for this piece.

The award-winning movie is available from Opus Arte. Hit play or go to Link [YouTube] – Thanks Jhayne!

Gravity does the work in this game, all you have to do is rotate the circle, allowing the ball to fall through the maze. It seems simple, but it’s not easy! Link -via b3ta

$6 Million Home Theater

Posted by Miss Cellania in Movies & SciFi on February 8, 2008 at 12:21 pm

480_theater

Jeremy Kipnis has the ultimate home theater.

His Stewart Snowmatte laboratory-grade screen is the biggest I’ve ever seen in a home, and in the back of the theater, there’s a Sony ultra-high-resolution (4,096-by-2,160) SRX-S110 digital projector. I’m looking everywhere, jotting down questions, and Kipnis sounds almost giddy talking about his theater’s capabilities. He refers to his baby, the Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS), as “The Greatest Show on Earth.” And from the looks of it, he may be right.

The equipment specs are impressive, and the photographs even more so. Link -via Unique Daily and Oh Gizmo!

Cover the Red Spot

Posted by Miss Cellania in Flash Games on February 8, 2008 at 12:19 pm

150reddotThe object of the game is to cover the red spot completely with five of the gray spots. Very difficult. I’ve seen this game in way back in my childhood (not online, of course), but I still don’t know the trick to it. Link -via Dump Trumpet

150clintonobamaIllustrator Steve Brodner is sketching the candidates in on ongoing series of animations for The New Yorker called The Naked Campaign. There are eleven videos so far. I especially enjoyed Odd Couples, featuring Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as entertainment icons. His latest is Mad World, where he gives the candidates tattoos of the states they’ve won. 14 Uses for Orphan Socks

Posted by Miss Cellania in Home & Garden on February 8, 2008 at 8:51 am

150sockPlanetgreen has a list of 14 things you can do with “orphaned” socks, i.e. socks that have no mate. Many of these ideas have links to instructions, such as these puppets from Treehugger. But be warned: if my experience is any indication, doing any of these things will cause the sock’s mate to finally show up. Link -via Lifehacker
