Edward Khoo > Most of them were built during 17th and 18th centuries, the engineers of this period already had all the required tools to trace such figures. The forts don't use a lot of stones, their "walls" use dirt (it's more efficient for the absorption of cannonball's impacts).

In France a lot of them were built under the supervision of Vauban, during the reign of Louis XIV.

these are so beautiful. i love star shapes because they can be simple and intricate at the same time.

I wonder what the reasoning behind the star shape is. is it easier to defend?

Pudifoot> It allows defenders to fire on anyone attacking adjacent walls. So if you attack almost any place on the fort, you would end up taking fire from at least three sides.
