Deputydog has posted photographs of six incredible star forts. These are communities surrounded by a wall, road, or waterway shaped like a star. Although some have been around for hundreds of years, their real beauty shines when seen from the sky. This one is Bourtange, in the Netherlands. Link

Edward Khoo > Most of them were built during 17th and 18th centuries, the engineers of this period already had all the required tools to trace such figures. The forts don't use a lot of stones, their "walls" use dirt (it's more efficient for the absorption of cannonball's impacts).

In France a lot of them were built under the supervision of Vauban, during the reign of Louis XIV.

I actually used lived in a place like that called Hulst in Southern Holland for 8 years. You can check out a picture of it here: http://www.zeelandnet.nl/weblog/data/cvg/item_images/img_1095590053549 .jpg

On google maps Hulst is here:

My dad also lived in a similar place near Amsterdam called Naarden: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=NAARDEN&sll=51.351201  ,-0.933838&sspn=5.092141,8.173828&ie=UTF8&ll=52.295593,5.163059&spn=0 .019475,0.031929&t=h&z=15&om=0

I wonder what the reasoning behind the star shape is. is it easier to defend?

Pudifoot> It allows defenders to fire on anyone attacking adjacent walls. So if you attack almost any place on the fort, you would end up taking fire from at least three sides.
