How similar are housecats and lions? In this TV clip from Japan Probe, you can see how lions play with cat toys, fall under the spell of catnip, learn to open a door, and deal with mirrors. Link -via Arbroath

Why do a lot of Japanese women in news/video clips like this sound like theyve been inhaling helium?

They cut the part out where they throw the kid out the window with string hanging out of his back pocket.

More like “Housecats: just little lions?”
Ours would certainly eat us if she were big and hungry enough. We are only permitted to live because we have hands ans she can’t open cans.

I find the entire message of this video disturbing - “Hey, look, this lion is just a big version of your house cat! Go rub its belly and see what happens”. Those people with the “cat toy” deserve to be mauled for their stupidity. Antagonizing a wild animal that way serves no zoological purpose. We keep feral animals in captivity for educational and conservational purposes, not for entertainment.

Yeah, NeuroGirl, but if you don’t keep them happy, then they die of sadness. I’m sure they were running an experiment, making sure that in no way were they hurting the cats. Why can’t a lion play around? Is that inhumane? I’m like Louise, my cats are more like little lions. They love attacking my feet around the edge of doors.

Lions: just big housecats that can kill you!

My cat sometimes attack me for no reason, just for fun, I can’t imagine what a lion’s idea of “fun” would be. Oh wait yes I can: DEATH!

I fear the message of this video. I hope this doesn’t make people go out and get baby lions thinking they’re just big kittens and then dump they’re “pets” somewhere, completely unprepared for a normal life of any sort. The message should be that housecats are mini-lions.
All animals are dangerous around idiots, anyway. >.< I don’t think they were antagonizing the lions purposely, though.
In the end, we need to respect all living creatures, ones that can nibble our toes at night and ones that can bite our heads off.

    @ Lea

I hope you can point me towards the pet shop that sells lion cubs, however, I’m not going to buy a lion cub instead I’m going to buy me a panda cub! ;)

is that a bag of heroin he’s sprinkling on those bits of wood? surely that’s unethical?

it’s called the black market. Or if you have cash to blow, there are breeders who are more than willing to sell exotic animals to those who are unequipped to care physically and mentally for an undomesticated animal. -.-

Just two hops on the scientific taxonomy tree separate the two - so why the big surprise that they have similar behavior?

Now comparing Cheney and a Sea Cucumber - THAT would be interesting.

You know, it’s good that these lions aren’t from San Francisco. The teasers would’ve been killed already…

All cats big and small can make great pets if you are able to take extream care of them. big or small need to be taken serious if not you might be there next meal,of course domestic cats can’t eat you,but they know when you are good enough for them.
