Haha, I was scrolling through the post, and I read “… Lincoln vs Douglas, Cleveland vs Blaine, Hoover vs Smith, Puppy vs Robot” — funny post title sequence
Puppy vs Robot - that’s a presidential race I want to see! -

I bet the Federalists would be so very upset to know that Jefferson was immortalized in 1936 as one of America’s great presidents on Mount Rushmore.
Probably about as upset as Jefferson would be to find out that his face is gracing a federal reserve note.

I’d have to vote for the 1828 election — the opposition called Jackson’s wife a whore, and so on. Even today’s negative campaigns don’t go that far — “Joe Smith voted against a bill that would have provided free lunches to poor children. Also, his wife banged a ton of guys in college.”
As for the 1800 election, I mean, that paragraph proves that the “founding fathers” agreed that they didn’t like the King of England, but not much else. It weakens the argument those who today invoke the founding fathers almost like they shared one mind: “The founding fathers would support/oppose George W. Bush.”

Just last week my hairdresser was complaining about the nastiness in politics today (a conversation we’ve had several times). I keep telling her things used to be a lot worse, but she never seems to believe me. I’m going to print this out for her since I know she’ll get a kick out of it.

Hey, President Jackson, why the long face?
No, really, did he have a face like a Kerry caricature and the dollar bill portrait is meant to be more flattering? He does look more dashing on it.

These dirty campaigns were mentioned on NPR today - I wonder if this article influenced the talk!

1800: “You can imagine that things were a little tense in the White House in the months leading up to the election.”
Jefferson didn’t live there until 1801.

1828! Don’t forget, that Jackson’s wife Rachel died 2 weeks after the election due to “unknown reasons”. Jackson forever blamed her death on Adams and all the stress caused by the stories told about her.

I learned in school that in response to -
“Ma! Ma! Where’s pa?”
his supporters would respond -
“Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!” -

What year was it when the one guy slapped the other guy in the middle of the debate? I don’t remember their names, but the one guy walked across the stage and slapped the other guy. I heard he keyed his car another time.
