Quote: Laurence J. Peter on Worker Incompetence

"In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence."

- Laurence J. Peter, "hierarchiologist" (1919 - 1990), Peter Principle

It took me a while to understand this principle, but once I did, it made total sense. As long as your performance is good, you'll keep getting promoted. It's only when your performance is bad that they'll stop promoting you. So you get promoted to your level of incompetence.

I don't like to use the term "hierarchy" when talking about a free market, in which the employer-employee relationship is voluntary and mutually beneficial. Of course, I've never seen a free market in my entire life.
