Hm, it was Thomas Watson at the Bathroom Reader article. I think that was a mistake as well. Fixed now.

I've read all the stories in the Holmes canon and I have to agree with the other posters about "Thomas Watson". John is usually used, but I'm pretty sure it does say James at least once. Thomas? Never that I can recall.

There are a couple famous Thomas Watsons (different people):
1. either Alexander Graham Bell's assistant "Mr. Watson, come here! I want you!"
2. or it's the guy who founded IBM, Thomas J. Watson.

THOMAS?!? Where'd you get that reference? In the very first story, it clearly states: "Being a reprint from the reminiscences of John H. Watson, M.D."

Ah this is great! My history teacher wrote a book about the origins of Sherlock Holmes (about the teacher)! He made us all read it... a bit annoying but it was pretty good. Better than some of his other ones anyway.

Sherlock Holmes was based on C Auguste Dupin from The Murders in Rue Morgue, a short story by Edgar Allen Poe.

I'm pretty sure Watson's first name is John, and he is called James occasionally by his wife.
