mmm, orangutan babies are delicious!
but seriously, that is one tough lady
I find myself welling up with tears while watching this- Such beauty, competence and dignity- the culmination of four million million years of evolution leading to the birth of this small, fragile being. This truly is a wonderful world.
Oh..how she loves that baby! It even looks, at one point, she is giving it a kiss. Bless the beasts and the Children!
Here is one more vote for crazy gross. Almost made me lose my cookies.
@Dan, jerse, bratsche, and kid icarus -
If you find something that happens every day in the wild gross and disgusting, then maybe you should think about how it is natural. Just because we live in a world where doctors do much of the work for us, a single orang utang going through the whole birth procedure by herself, who else is their to clear the goo off? I think it’s an amazing treasure to watch a moment as rare as this.
That goo/placenta is also eaten by many other animals. It’s filled with many vitamins and nutrients. Cats do it all the time.
Jeez, people, it’s not like the mom is gonna reach for a moist towelette. When you grow up you can join us here in the real world.
jack.wh, considering how totally maternal she is, I can imagine the reaction if anyone tried to “help” her!
Hey, just because it’s natural and normal and eerily beautiful doesn’t make it less gross. Cleaning the baby by eating it- how adorable
Wow – that is easily my favorite video clip of the week! Great find, Miss C!
Does anyone know what’s up with the chewbacca-like groaning in the background? That can’t be the mom, right… (at one point she was slurping the new baby and I don’t think she could slurp and burp at the same time)
