RIP Gemina the Crooked-Necked Giraffe

By Alex in Animals & Pets, Video Clips on Jan 13, 2008 at 7:14 am

Every time my family and I visit the Santa Barbara Zoo, we always went to see Gemina the crooked-necked giraffe. So it was sad that I found out that Gemina had to be euthanized because her health declined due to old age.

Gemina had just turned 21 (see video clip below), and that was considered quite an old age for a giraffe.

The number one question asked in the Santa Barbara Zoo was what caused Gemina’s crooked neck? No one knew the answer, actually.

Well, it’s good to hear the animal lived to an old age with that condition.

Condition? She was unhappy with her ordinary straight neck, and went in for body modification.
She had a few verterbrae removed and used them for nose plugs.

That funky giraffe will be missed. I’ll have to tell my 6 year old sooner or later.
