That is brilliant. If you're offended, scroll one up to The Simpsons article about how Washington State dropped Math & Science because low scores were bringing their average down. Kudos to the teacher for trying to make the kids realize what options they will have if they don't make an effort.

Why should working at McDonalds be an embarrassment? Some people are just not going to do any better than that in life. For a math teacher to try and embarrass a student into doing better this way is just insulting and arrogant.
Maybe the kid failed because of his poor teaching methods. Maybe the kid already works at McDonalds and didn't have time to study a subject he's not gonna use.

Most of the people here are complaining about the teacher doing this yet defending McDonald's as a workplace. If they don't see working there as a problem then why would they see an application to work there as offensive?

I also find it funny how many comments are about feelings... Coddling and being super friendly to failing little brats will do the exact opposite of good for them. The math teacher isn't being paid our tax dollars to make kids "feel good." The math teacher is being paid our tax dollars to try and get some math skills into the kids' heads. If you think smiling and saying "awww... an F is okay; math isn't important" would be good for a kid, please do not breed, teach, babysit, or otherwise interact with developing humans, ever.

I don't think it's vindictive, mean, etc... A teacher who doesn't care about your future won't try to shock you into working harder on a vital topic. Most high school kids have a plethora of interests... math class is usually low on their list, even though knowing math will have a direct impact on one's financial success in life. Kids get *one* chance to build their knowledge and skills, completely for free without the financial burdens that await, and that is free schooling. A nasty message like this might actually kick a kid into trying harder... this teacher is being extremely kind.

Working at McDonalds or your local drugstore isn’t something to be ashamed of. They provide opportunitis to word and to climb the social ladder when you have no diploma or schooling, or abilities to get one. Even if it looks like a last chane move, I am still a fierce defender of those going to work there.
And for the clever kids? a good way to see the real wold.

I think it reveals the teacher believes that some people work harder than others, and that there are practical consequences for failing to apply yourself.

That said, I agree that this is vindictive and insulting. But some kids need a wake-up call.

While I liked school and had some cool teachers, I have to agree that this is a pretty annoying thing. It's arrogant, vendictive, and insulting all at once.

Also, it clearly reveals that the teacher believes that certain people are clearly 'better' than other. (Granted, many people might believe this, but I try to uphold the ideal we're all in this together as humans.)

That's why I hated school so much.
Cynical, sadistic, self-indulgent teachers who think they're entitled to humiliate you just because you can't follow their subject. I had to leave school and make it on my own because of that brand of teachers. I give him an F.
