Website Compiles Carnival and Theme Park Rides Accidents

Posted by Alex in Blog & Internet on January 2, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Don’t visit RideAccidents if you love going on carnival and theme park rides! The website compiled a record of all types of injuries and fatalities from amusement rides around the world.

For example:

Woman, 60, in critical condition after fall from Ferris wheel
(Friday, September 28, 2007) – At the Middle Tennessee District Fair in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured when she fell from the top of a Ferris wheel. The woman fell 30 feet from the top of the ride and landed onto spokes near the center axle of the wheel. Rescue workers removed her from the ride and rushed her to a hospital. Initially, she was listed in critical condition, however she is expected to recover from her injuries, which include a broken collar bone, ribs and leg.

Witnesses told investigators that the woman was standing up and waving inside the gondola when she fell.

The ride was shut down as a precaution, and inspectors were expected to investigate. (Photo: Mathew Star)

Who knew that having fun is dangerous to your health? LinkThanks Brad!

Clever Ad Eliminates Hunger and Sells Soup All at the Same Time

Posted by Alex in Advertising, Food & Drinks, Pictures on January 2, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Those smart advertising people at Canadian ad agency Leo Burnett [Flash] came up with this clever art/public service/marketing of Campbell’s Soup installation that tugged on your heart string:

In a grocery store 4,820 cans of Campbell’s Soup were used to build an installation piece that spelled HUNGER. Signage beside the piece encouraged shoppers to buy one and donate it to their local food bank. As shoppers bought cans from the display the word HUNGER slowly disappeared. This allowed people to see how their individual effort coule help bring an end to the problem of hunger.

Mashup of the Billboard Top 25 of 2007

Posted by Alex in Music on January 2, 2008 at 4:39 pm

DJ Earworm has taken the Billboard Top 25 songs of 2007 in the United States and mashed them all up into a 5 minute long song The United State of Pop.

I don’t know what is sadder, that I only know like one or two of the Top 25 songs or that the mashup is probably better than the individual tracks!

Python Mistook Golf Balls for Chicken Eggs

Posted by Alex in Animal on January 2, 2008 at 3:06 pm

An Australian couple put some golf balls in their chicken coop to encourage their hen to lay eggs (who knew this would work!?) but discovered that a python had eaten them by mistake!

The magnanimous couple took the snake to a nearby animal sanctuary, where a vet performed surgery to remove the balls and saved the python. Link

FBI Still Looking For D.B. Cooper

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on January 2, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Some 36 years after a man who called himself D.B. Cooper parachuted out of an airliner with a bag of $200,000 in stolen cash.

Now, the FBI has re-opened the case and issued a new picture of what he looked like, in hope that someone would come forward with new information.

“Diving into the wilderness without a plan, without the right equipment, in such terrible conditions, he probably never even got his chute open,” Carr said.

Still, the FBI would like to know for sure, and Carr thinks the public might be able to help.

“Maybe a hydrologist can use the latest technology to trace the $5,800 in ransom money found in 1980 to where Cooper landed upstream. Or maybe someone just remembers that odd uncle,” he said.

Baby Born At McDonald's

Posted by Algonkin in Video Clips on January 2, 2008 at 10:15 am

A baby was born in a McDonald’s restroom in Vancouver, Wash, and the mother didn’t even know she was pregnant.

It was the evening shift last Friday at the fast-food restaurant when employee Danille Miller suddenly felt ill and ran for the bathroom. Her 16-year-old co-worker, Jaynae Herrera, followed “I was like are you pregnant?” Herrera asked. “Because she was in the bathroom, and I’m like, are you pregnant? She says, I don’t think so. A couple minutes later, she says the baby is coming out, and that’s when I started freaking out.”

Herrera, with the assistance of a 911 dispatcher, helped her deliver baby Austin Laddusaw, and both mother and baby are fine. Miller said, “I was so shocked I couldn’t talk. I was shaking the whole time. I didn’t stop shaking until three the next morning. My sister stayed the night with me.”
