Winter Surfing

When the wind chill is below 0°F and the water is below freezing, surfing is the last thing on most people’s minds. Not so for Toronto surfers Mark Karvonen, Walter Tuokkola, and Geoff Johnson, who headed down to Lake Ontario to catch some waves. Why?

Mark: Because that’s when the waves are at their best! Storms that track up the US, especially along the east coast, kick up some serious swells on Lake Ontario. A little snow storm won’t keep us from the sport we love. In fact, we look forward to big storms because we know they bring waves with them.

I guess winter storms cause the waves so the have to surf in the snow.. Strange though, Lake Surfing.. Kind of like Bass fishing in the Pacific.

Looks like guys’re having a lot of fun.

By the way, I was searching for that video in Europe where some 3 guys jump off a great cliff and glide before launching their parachute. Does anyone have link to that video?

Is the pollution any better in the wintertime?

I live at Higgins Beach in Maine, and there are actually more surfers in the winter than in the summer. Winter storms cause bigger waves (which are still pretty puny by Pacific standards) and it’s easier to access the beach after all the summer people have left.

The water is below freezing? That would make for interesting surf.

Nothing in the slightest unusual about winter sufring – it happens everywhere there you get waves and winter!
