the creepy thing is that, not half an hour ago, i got this song randomly stuck in my head and have no idea why. perhaps i’m psychically connected to neatorama, hahaha!

That guy is amazing! would be a little scary though if it was the other way round and was a woman who could sing like a man! Especially if she was singing, say for example a Barry White song

A man singing high or with a woman’s voice is called falsetto.

There’s something about his voice that makes me nerves stand on end. Absolutely terrible.

He could have an amazing career as a Drag Queen, certainly makes a change from all the ones that mime.

I saw a drag show once - real disappointment to see them lip sync. Can’t see him making it as a male singer with that voice.

Odd! Most men can speak / sing in falsetto, but it’s rare to have such a robust range in falsetto.
He has a nice natural talent (even if the result is that he sounds like the opposite gender!)
I’d love to see him in an initial audition for American Idol, just because it would be great to see how surprised the judges wold be.

I’d agree that this is neat and a great song. But, I think the link from Jacki above is a better example of his range…both parts of a duet.

Vonskippy, do you know what they call the procedure when they add male parts to a female?
Addadictomy

This is not a falsetto.
Nick Patera is a counter tenor. Counter tenors sing with a natural head voice in the alto, mezzo and soprano ranges.
There’s a couple of places he goes into falsetto. But 95% of his singing is pure counter tenor head voice.

Babson is correct; some singers will use falsetto techniques in countertenor, but in general this is very different singing technique.
The first time I heard a guy singing counter tenor/soprano, I was floored; I had the TV on for background noise while doing some stuff around the house, and PBS was playing some Christmas musical. I heard this beautiful soprano voice, and when I looked at the TV it was a guy! I did some reading on the subject, and it turns out that it’s not that uncommon, but that doesn’t translate into it being well known.

What a lovely voice and beautiful vibrato. This young man could definitely benefit from some classical vocal training. I’m a sucker for a good baritone, but this guy kind of makes me want to change my listening preference…lol.
I am a mezzo-soprano with quite a 3-octave range (which is rare enough for women), and I find it absolutely fascinating when a guy has a similar range. I so want to sing a duet with this young man….

I can sing like that too, right after I get kicked in the balls.
But seriously, that was awesome! Great find algonkin!

You know what would be great?
If someone made a joke about being able to sing octaves higher than usual after being hit in the balls. Man… I can’t believe no one has made that joke yet. Especially since that’s what happens when you get hit in the balls… you sing… and you do it in an abnormally high voice…
I wish someone would have made that joke. What a missed opportunity to totally ignore a person’s incredibly unique talent by sounding like a juvenile redneck who dropped out of high school.
I guess there’s always next post.

I can make original jokes, like being able to sing higher after being hit in the balls,… after getting hit in the balls!!!

Wow. He’s a got voice meant for a Disney princess. I initially thought the lead singer for Coheed & Cambria was female after first hearing “A Favor House Atlantic,” but even that was a deeper pitch than this.
