Leaping Mobula Rays - Neatorama

In the Sea of Cortez at the southern Gulf of Mexico, there is a spectacular sight of ... leaping Mobula rays!

It looks like a futuristic space ship skimming over the ocean's surface. Or maybe a triangular shaped prototype aircraft launched from the depths.
In fact it is a Mobula Ray, a smaller cousin of the Manta Ray, which puts on a spectacular leaping display. Mobula Ray pictures reveal spectacular leaps [...]
They hurtle up from the depths and leap several feet into the air often turning somersaults in the process.

One small correction.

You are correct that this happens in the Sea of Cortez, but it is not located in the southern Gulf of Mexico. It is between Baja & mainland Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico is on the other side between Mexico and Florida.

This is timely-- I was snorkeling down in Cabo San Lucas last Thursday (the 23rd), and we indeed saw these guys leaping from a distance. They are pretty spectacular! They also like to hang out at the surface, basking, with the tips of their fins up in the air so they look like two small sharks swimming side by side.
