Guy Fawkes Night

I prefer to think of Guy Fawkes night as a celebration of what nearly was.

Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators were Catholic, so they're almost considered martyrs here in Ireland. The day is not marked here, and the fireworks are set off over Halloween, a.k.a. the pagan festival Samhain. They're illegal outside official displays, but there are still plenty around.

I'd never heard of this until I read "V for Vendetta" and tried to figure out what they were referring to. America is -not- one of the former colonies that celebrates this.

WE WHO KNOW have been celebrating it for nearly 20 years and have even rewritten the Doors' song "20th Century Fox" with lyrics honoring him. In fact we're due for another round and another verse for Guy right now!

out of curiosity: when did you celebrate it? Because from many people in good ol' Blighty I heard that they celebrated it on Saturday, the 3rd of November - simply because it was the weekend. Did anyone stick to the actual date?

Bonfire night is often held at the weekend nearest the 5th if it's not on a weekend, having said that; here in Cambridge the organised local event was on the day.

It's more fun if you live in the country and have a big garden to have your own fire, at least that's how I remember it as a child.

I don't really think it has any political meaning to most people now (I'm half Irish and never heard them being described as martyrs), it's just a night for fun and baked potatoes!

They did point out that it was probably lucky it did fail as there would've likely been a massive uproar against the small Catholic population.

Something that isn't mentioned in the history books and is something that should never, never be forgot.

Is that in 1906 word had been heard that King James was rewriting the bible for the benifit for control
over Britain and of future souls.

Nobody today sees this as a great crime or an act of treason against the human race. Royalty and the rich
have used this evil book to confuse and manipulate millions.

Down with James and praise to Guido for trying to save us from the blood shed of the modern day crusades!

In future, let's put the king on the fire and while the sky explodes in colour, let us admire Mr.Fawkes,
the everyday man, who stood up and fort against these filthy tyrants and dictators.
