World's Smallest Horse at Work

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animal on November 3, 2007 at 9:42 pm

150_thumbelinaThumbelina is the world’s smallest horse. She stands only 17.5 inches at the shoulder, and weighs only 57 pounds. She is a miniature horse, but she is also a dwarf, which makes her smaller than the smallest of her breed. Thumbelina has been mentioned at Neatorama before, but did you know she has a job visiting children who are hospitalized?

Ever since Thumbelina was a foal, the Goesslings noticed that she gravitated toward sick children.

“She has a way of seeking out kids who are suffering in some way,” Goessling said.

Thumbelina is on a tour of children’s hospitals across the US, and has raised over $100,000 for children’s charities. Link -via Fark

An Incredible Football Comeback Play.

Posted by Anita in Sports on November 3, 2007 at 9:37 pm

On October 27th, Division III Trinity University was losing to Millsaps College 24 to 21 with two seconds left on the clock. With 61 yards to the end zone, Trinity was clearly out of field goal range, so they performed what must be one of the craziest (and greatest) last-second plays ever.

Hit play, or go to the Link [YouTube] to watch the insanity.

Kids Invented the Wedgie-Proof Underwear

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids, Fashion on November 3, 2007 at 2:37 pm

As a kid, nothing is more humiliating than getting a wedgie from the school yard bully. But the nightmare is finally over, thanks to 8-year-old twins Jared and Justin Serovich, who created the world’s first wedgie-proof underwear, the Rip Away 1000!

This year, 8-year-old twins Jared and Justin Serovich were working each other over with the schoolyard bully’s staple when their mother, Julie, caught them in the act and took them to task.

Julie’s partner, Judy Kimberly, sarcastically suggested that someone should invent wedgie-proof underwear.

The boys, good students who excel at science and math, took the challenge seriously.

How did they do it?

"We took some old pairs of underwear and cut the bottom and side seams and put in Velcro," Jared explained.

Added Justin: "When the person tries to grab you — like the bully or the person tries to give you a wedgie — they just rip away."

Update 11/7/07: Here’s the Fox News Interview with twins, which includes a video demonstration of the wedgie-proof underwear: Link [YouTube link]

Our pal Jeffrey Martin of 360cities sent us this panorama that is not to be missed. It’s not officially launched yet, but should be accessible on this preview for Neatorama readers:

Taken from the top of the Twin Towers on June 17th, 2000, this rare VR is a window into the past. The view from the top was spectacular, especially on that particular Saturday morning. We were a different country then.

The Sheep Market: 10,000 Drawings of Sheep Using Amazon Mechanical Turk

Posted by Alex in Arts & Crafts, Blog & Internet on November 3, 2007 at 3:03 am

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a web marketplace that basically lets you buy labor for tasks particularly suited for humans (i.e. easy for man, but hard for computers).

The Sheep Market is a neat, albeit a little whimsical, application of this concept. For a 2006 art project, Aaron Koblin, then of the Department of Design|Media at UCLA, "bought" 10,000 drawings of a sheep facing to the left from thousands of workers for $0.02 each. The work and the animation process are captured and then displayed as an artwork!

Average time spent drawing each sheep: 105 seconds
Average wage: $0.69/hour
Rejected sheep: 662
Collection Period: 40 days
Collection rate: about 11 sheep/hour
Unique IP addresses: 7599

Whatever Happened to Seinfeld's Bit Actors?

Posted by Alex in Movies & SciFi on November 3, 2007 at 3:02 am

Ever wonder what happened to the cast of Seinfeld? No, not Jerry (he’s got a new Bee movie) or Ellen Elaine, George, and Kreamer Kramer – we mean the bit players. Like Babu, Man Hand, Low Talker, and Soup Nazi.

Mario Marsicano (or Jellio) of the always interesting YesButNoButYes blog tracked ‘em all down:

O’Henry? That’s one of our top-selling candy bars. It’s got chocolate, peanuts, nougat, it’s delicious, scrumptious, outstanding!

We’ll start with one of my favorites. Jackie Chiles had a way with words, using his talents to defend Kramer when he was scalded by coffee, disfigured from smoking and distracted by a bra. The cases didn’t go so well, but you may recall he ended up ok, being able to judge for himself that they were, indeed "real, and spectacular". Since then, Jim Morris has been all over the television dial, in everything from CSI to Smallville, with alot of voiceover work, as well. Here’s the most interesting thing I found…the University of Utah Law School has a Jackie Chiles Law Society, which seeks to "analyze America’s view of the Law based on how popular culture portrays it". That’s pretty spectacular, as well.

Steampunk Pac Man Arcade and Other Toys by Doktor A

Posted by Alex in Arts & Crafts, Toy & Video Games on November 3, 2007 at 3:00 am

Take a look at Doktor A’s custom toy solo show at Spit & Polish. The highlights of the show are these three:

The Secret History of Video Games : Pac Gentleman (Erik Scarecrow’s Soopa Coin Op Bros)
When this game was first released in 1880 it was so hugely popular in taverns and inns that the bank of England was forced to mint more threepenny bits to keep up with demand. The game was created by messrs Nam & Nam and Co. as a novelty pastime for the masses. Outdoing the previous top public house game of Shove Ha’penny.

Kraken Proof Aethernaut (Toki Doki Sabo Chan)
Those intrepid adventurers in the outer realms of her majesties solar system must become inventive to protect themselves from the crushing grasp of both the open Aether and the ravenous sky Krakens.
(Vinyl, Lead, Copper, Tin, Found Objects)

Colonel Juggernaut’s Cloud Challenger (Madl and Balloon)
Forced to abandon his Perambulation Engine due to intolerable slowness and annoying mechanical problems. Colonel Juggernaut is forced to take to the air in attempt to make up lost ground to Mr. Fogg.

Want to be a Jedi? Don’t just flail your lightsaber like the (in)famous Star Wars kid … As Yoda would’ve said: "To Star Wars Jedi Academy you must go". As Taryn Fireside, a student at the academy, said:

My favorite thing about New York Jedi is not nerds trying to best each other. It’s about nerds trying to better each other. And make life better through the dorkiness that make them great!

The Claxton Mailbox: The Only Mailbox in the World Hit by a Meteorite!

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on November 3, 2007 at 2:58 am

The banged-up Claxton mailbox to the left just got auctioned off for nearly $83,000! Why? It’s the only mailbox in the world ever hit by a meteorite!

The unusual auction offers a peek into meteorite collecting, where planetary fragments 4 billion years old can be worth less than the earthly objects they hit, and where the story behind a meteorite’s fall can dictate its value.

The Claxton mailbox has iconic status among collectors because of the tradition of naming meteorites for the nearest post office, according to owner Darryl Pitt.

"This is the first extraterrestrial delivery right into a mailbox," said Pitt, a New York jazz promoter.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the story: Link (Image: Darryl Pitt) | Claxton mailbox historyThanks christian!

Ten Obscure but Useful Windows Softwares

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on November 3, 2007 at 2:57 am

Quang Pham of Haha.nu just posted one of the most useful top 10 list I’ve seen in a while: a list of lesser known Windows freewares/sharewares with the functionality but not the bloat of commercial programs.

Included in the list are recuva (a free file recovery to recover accidentally deleted files), Notepad++ (which replaces and extends the functionality of Window’s utilitarian Notepad), i.Scribe (an email client that replaces the bloated Outlook) and so on.

Neatorama's Halloween Pumpkin Owls

Posted by Alex in Pictures on November 3, 2007 at 2:56 am

Okay, just one last Halloween thingy … With all the Southern California fires, I had wanted to make jack-o’-lanterns that don’t need candles to look cool. Yes, you can use fancy LEDs to light up your pumpkin, but that’s way too high tech for me.

While we’re doing away with fires, let’s also get rid of having to “gut” the pumpkin and even carving it!

So, here are my pumpkins (mom, pop, and baby) – put together with toothpicks in just about 15 minutes (yes, all three of ‘em), since I was already running late on Halloween!

Watch Out for ... Berserk Llamas!

Posted by Alex in Animal on November 3, 2007 at 2:53 am

Just as I thought it’s safe to roam the hills again, National Geographic Magazine’s All-Terrain blog informs us of this frightening bit of news: the llamas have gone berserk!

"Do you have a llama that scares you? You are not alone."

So begins one Web site aimed at helping concerned llama breeders deal with a shameful problem that apparently has been haunting rural America since the pack animal first began to gain traction in the livestock market in the 1970’s.

"… [S]cary and dangerous behaviors often develop without the handler or owner even knowing that something is wrong … until it is really wrong," the site continues.

Some call it, simply, "Berserk Syndrome," or "Berserk Male Syndrome." Others refer to it more broadly as "Berserk
Llama Syndrome."
