Man Turned Trevi Fountain Red in Protest

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law, Politics, Travel & Places on October 20, 2007 at 1:31 pm

Someone threw a bucket of red paint into Rome’s Trevi Fountain, and turned the tourist attraction bright red!

Experts said the baroque fountain was not permanently damaged and the marble statues depicting the sea deity Neptune on his chariot had not absorbed the color.

The news agency ANSA reported that a box was found near the fountain containing leaflets by a group that claimed responsibility for the act.
The leaflets said the red paint was a protest for expenses incurred in organizing the Rome Film Festival and symbolically referred to the event’s red carpet, ANSA reported.

    From the Link:

"There shouldn't be any relevant damage," said Eugenio La Rocca, superintendent for Rome's monuments.

    Hardly ruined.

Dumping paint in a fountain is artistic expression? Couldn't he just have tossed in a white canvas or maybe kissed it?

I am glad it was not ruined. The A**holes have no respect for anything, there are better ways of protesting. How would he like it if someone threw a bucket of red paint all over his car or home? Should he be caught they ought to tie him up and let people throw red paint all over him for 2 days.

@ted: I should have put my comment in quotes, as in Rome is probably not the best place for those protestors to be making their stance against artistic expression, be it a film fest or a fountain.

Yup, jokes are always funnier when you explain them. :(

Yup. Wasn't sure where people's sympathies were with this one. Damn sarcasm meter - acting up again.
