By Aleki in Animals & Pets on Oct 8, 2007 at 2:14 pm

In the spirit of “International Cephalopod Awareness Day” here’s a fun clip of an octopus changing colors. Truly amazing animals.

P.S. Happy ICAD Miss Cellania!

everytime i see that i am amazed, it almost doesn’t seem real. if it isn’t i will have been justified in saying that, but i still remain convinced. now if only i could do that.

I’m not totally sure about this one, either… if you look closely when there are five seconds of video left, you can see spikes/coral limbs growing out of the octopus’ head. I know they can change color, but I’m not sure that they can shapeshift. :)

This is not a fake video. It is a part NOVA Origin series.

It’s astonishing. They have mastered the art of invisibility!

saehn–they can also alter the surface texture of their skin. They use thousands of tiny muscles to pull up and pucker areas of their skin. This adds to their disguise and breaks up their outline. (Kinda like the ragged edges on a ghillie suit!)
