I have always traveled with just one carry on bag, it is definitely the way to go. If you run out of your three ounce stuff, just buy more when you get to where you're going...

What if you need more than 3 oz bottles of shampoo and stuff? And wouldn't nail clippers and razors be confiscated at security points as well? I used to pack one carry on, but all that has changed since heightened airport security. Now I always need a bag checked.

Not needed. I figured out years ago how to head for somewhere for an indefinite stay with just a medium size backpack.

It isn't difficult, but requires doing your laundry every couple days.
