Rare Albino Ratfish Looks as Ugly as it Sounds

Posted by Alex in Animal, Pictures on September 26, 2007 at 1:30 am

Scientists found a rare albino ratfish and declared it still as ugly as the normal ones:

"They’re pretty ugly," said Jon Reum, a University of Washington doctoral student who spent his summer working on the marine survey. "They’ve got this gnarly spine on their backs, they bite, and they’re just a pain to work with."

I was just about to say it's not ugly but Jenny beat me to it.

You say it looks as ugly as it sounds, but what does it sound like?

How about a link to an MP3? :)

I personally think it's a very pretty fish -- a miracle of nature. However, this story reminds me of the fact that many restaurants are serving "Chilean Sea Bass" as an upscale dish. The "Chilean Sea Bass" is actually a Patagonian Toothfish, and there are those who say it's ugly and this is a brilliant marketing ploy. As a human who might be considered ugly by some, I wonder what this says about humanity. Luckily I have a good outlook on life and a sense of self esteem. There is no such thing as "ugly." Just my two cents.

I don't think it looks really that ugly. It looks as if it was made out of pearl!
