Doggy Poo the Movie

Posted by Alex in Comics & Cartoons, Video Clips on September 12, 2007 at 12:03 pm

Every so often a character enters the realm of popular culture and quickly becomes unforgettable … an instant classic. This is the story of nature’s most unlikely hero … Doggy Poo!

Yes, a real film spotted by Neatorama reader Bethany Tackett who wrote:

Doggy Poo is a real movie. My husband and I found and watched it on Netflix as a "free" movie download for Netflix members. It’s 36 minutes of weirdness. It’s a stop motion movie created in Korea. There are two versions of the movie (Korean spoken language with english subtitles or dubbed English language).

Here’s the Netflix review:

This charmingly eccentric cartoon from Korea features a little mound of dog poo on a quest to find meaning and purpose in his life. Left all alone on the side of the road and feeling abandoned and helpless, he believes his life is without value. Luckily, the despondent poo is befriended by a dandelion sprite who helps him recognize his worth.

There is a Skinny Gene After All!

Posted by Alex in Health, Science & Tech on September 12, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Yay for Dr. Jonathan Graff and his team from UT Southwestern Medical Center! They have just re-discovered the long lost "skinny" gene:

The gene, called adipose, was discovered in fat fruit flies more than 50 years ago by a graduate student at Yale University, but few people knew about it. Its mechanism was unknown, and whether it’s important in other genes was a mystery. [...]

It was discovered that the gene, which is also present in humans, is likely to be a high-level master switch that tells the body whether to accumulate or burn fat.

In the mice, the researchers found that increasing adipose activity improved the animals’ health in many ways. Mice with experimentally increased adipose activityate as much or more than normal mice; however, they were leaner, had diabetes-resistant fat cells, and were better able to control insulin and blood-sugar metabolism.

In contrast, animals with reduced adipose activity were fatter, less healthy and had diabetes.

Rich Congressman Won Lottery for the Third Time: Lucky or Conspiracy?

Posted by Alex in Politics on September 12, 2007 at 12:01 pm

I’m thoroughly convinced that only two types of people win the lottery: the poor who shouldn’t be playing in the first place but do so in large number and the very rich who don’t need the money but buy the tickets anyhow.

Case in point: Jim Sensenbrenner, a US Representative from Wisconsin and a millionaire (he is heir to the Kimberly-Clark fortune) won the lottery THREE times!

The conservative Republican first hit it big in 1997 with a $250,000 jackpot in the District of Columbia lottery. Then, last spring, he won a $1,000 consolation prize in the Wisconsin lottery, before winning another $1,000 in that lottery last week.

I call conspiracy, though it’s possible that Jim, who spends $10 a week on lottery tickets, is just a really, really, really lucky guy: Link | Photo from Sensenbrenner’s entry at Wikipedia.

The Spider Ship Proteus Spotted in New York

Posted by Alex in Auto & Transportation on September 12, 2007 at 12:00 pm

The strange, spider-legged catamaran called Proteus just came to New York after visiting San Francisco earlier this year.

Here’s something new about Proteus I didn’t know before:

The spindly catamaran is so efficient that it can travel 5,000 miles — farther than across the Atlantic — on one load of diesel fuel.

1,000 days at sea.

Posted by Miss Cellania in World Records on September 12, 2007 at 9:12 am

Reid Stowe and his girlfriend Soanya Ahmad are on day 143 of a planned 1,000 day voyage in the South Atlantic on a 70-foot schooner.

Stowe calls his project the Mars Ocean Odyssey, because he thinks the journey will provide valuable lessons for a manned flight to Mars, when astronauts would be confined to a small vessel for two to three years, separated from terra firma and most of humanity.

But

A representative for NASA says she doesn’t know anyone at the agency who is following Stowe’s mission.

The 55-year-old Stowe is an experienced sailor, having logged several very long trips, including a voyage to Antarctica in 1986. 24-year-old Ahmad never stepped foot on a boat before meeting Stowe four years ago. The world record for the longest continuous sail is currently 657 days. Link to article. Link to website.
